Ryan Dundun (born March 27, 1996) is an American track and field athlete.[1] As an athlete, Dundun specialized in the 400-meter hurdles relay.[2] He is known to have competed and won several national indoor and outdoor relays such as Big Ten Championship, NCAA West Preliminary Championships, WIAA Track, and Field Championships, Wisconsin Alumni Classic, California Collegiate Open, and several others.[3][4]

Early life and education

Dundun was born on March 27, 1996, in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The son of a Nigerian father, Herbie Dundun, and half Irish and half-German mother, Gina Dundun. He attended Milwaukee Public School to complete his elementary schooling. Dundun enrolled in Brookfield East High School to complete his secondary education.[5] He later completed his bachelor’s in statistics and economics from the University of Wisconsin, in 2019.[6][7]

Growing up, Dundun played soccer and chess and was a part of various track and field clubs. He was the captain of his high school soccer team. Other than sports he was interested in math, and computers.[8]

Career

High school

During high school, Dundun played soccer as the captain of his school team. In 2013, he earned MVP honors under the supervision and guidance of Randy Bucheger, and Mike Steiner.[9]

As a junior athlete, he ran a 4x800m relay at the WIAA Track and Field Championships. He secured a state title and school record. His team won WIAA Division I Track and Field Championships for three consecutive years from 2011 to 2013. He also competed at the 2013 Penn Relays in the 4x800m relay.[10] During his sophomore, junior, and senior years, he and his team, the Spartans, was credited with four Greater Metro Conference team titles.

2017 season

During the year 2017, at the Big Ten Championships, Dundun ran the 400 hurdles in 56.21, which put him in 22nd place.[11] At the Wisconsin Alumni Classic on May 5, he won the 400-hurdle race with a personal-best time of 53.49. At the John McDonnell Invitational, Dundun ran the 400m hurdles in a time of 58.97, which put him in fifth place. At the Jim Click Shootout, he got sixth place in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.81. At the badger Icebreaker, Dundun ran the 400m in 49.73, which was good enough for third place. He also helped Wisconsin win the 4x400-meter relay with his team.[12]

2018 season

In the 2018 outdoor, Dundun’s mark of 52.22 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships placed him in 34th position overall. At the Big Ten Championships, he finished 21st in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.19. He ran a personal best of 52.00 in the 400-meter hurdles at the National Relays and was a member of the DMR. At the Beach Invitational, he placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 52.19 seconds. In the Mt. SAC Relays, he placed eleventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.28. At the Spec Towns Invite, he placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.40 and third in the 400-meter event with a time of 49.04. He won the 400m hurdles at the California Collegiate Open with a timing of 52.50.[13]

At the Wisconsin Shell Shocker, in his first race of the season, he finished sixth overall in the 400 meters with a time of 50.98 seconds.[14]

2019 season

In 2019, Dundun competed in the 400m hurdles relay at the Big Ten Championships. In the preliminary round, he placed ninth with a time of 52.19. He has also competed for many championships in the Wisconsin Alumni Classic, where he won the 400m hurdles relay, placed second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:14:20, and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay squad that crossed the finish line in 41.12. At the Penn Relays, Dundun was a member of the 4x400 relay team that finished in 25th place with a total time of 3:14:67.[15][16][17]

On March 8, 2019, at the NCAA Indoor Championships, he ran the 400-meter leg of the distance medley relay in 48.65 seconds, which helped the relay finish seventh overall in 9:34.74.[18] At the Big Ten Championships, he participated in the winning distance medley relay, which clocked in at 9:44.62. He placed third in the 400 meters at the Red & White Classic with a personal best time of 49.48 seconds.[19] At the Larry Wieczorek Invitational, he contributed to the Wisconsin 4x400 relay's tenth-place finish in the premier race with a total time of 3:15.74.[20]
