Matteo Giovannini
Matteo Giovannini (born September 10, 1980) is an Italian finance professional, banker, and columnist based in Beijing. He currently works as Senior Finance Manager at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the world’s largest financial institution by total assets. He is a citizen of Italy and a Permanent Resident of China.
Early life and education
Born on September 10, 1980, in Trento, a city in the Trentino–Alto Adige region of northern Italy, Giovannini attended Liceo Scientifico Leonardo Da Vinci high school. In 2000 he moved to Milan where he received his bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (UCSC) in 2005 and completed a master’s degree in Multimedia Management organized by IULM University in 2006. During the years in Italy's financial capital, he started to develop an interest towards China attending language classes and culture seminars at the Confucius Institute of the University of Milan. In 2013 he moved to the port city of Dalian as a language scholar at the Liaoning Normal University (LNU) and in 2014 he moved to Beijing to pursue a graduate degree in business. In 2015, he graduated with an MBA from the National School of Development at Peking University (PKU), which is ranked amongst the top five most influential think tanks in China.
Career
Giovannini started his professional career as a Business Analysis Intern at Mediaset S.p.A. From 2006 to 2013 he worked at Arnoldo Mondadori Editore S.p.A. with increasing responsibilities as a Financial Controller. In 2013, he was the recipient of a scholarship from the Chinese Government and moved to China to study language and culture. In 2016, he received his MBA from the National School of Development at Peking University. In the same year he started to work at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China becoming the only foreign staff member at the headquarters of one of China’s Big 4 state-owned banks.
He serves as International Committee Member of the Alumni UCSC Far East, as Advisory Committee Member of the Beijing Global Talent Exchange Association and as MBA Alumni Ambassador at Peking University.
In 2019 he was awarded as a Distinguished Foreign Expert by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA). In 2020 he received the ICBC Loyalty Award, granted for continuous and satisfactory service to the firm.
Since 2021 he is a member of the Global Young Leaders Dialogue (GYLD), a program jointly initiated by the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) and the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies (ACCWS).
He is a frequent contributor to major Chinese media outlets covering economy, finance and global affairs.
Personal life
Giovannini is married and lives in Beijing. He speaks 4 languages, including English, Italian, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. In August 2022 he received Permanent residency from the People’s Republic of China.
