LEM is a Swiss power electronics components manufacturer that offers progressive and high-quality solutions for measuring electrical parameters and sells components used to measure current and voltage. The company’s core products are current and voltage sensors. Its products are used in electric car motor batteries, motor, power converters, on-board charging systems, electric locomotives and metros, solar or wind power plants, EV charging infrastructures, smart grids, high-precision applications like MRIs or test benches, and in a wide range of industrial automation applications like robotics, servo drives, welding, etc.[1] LEM has the ambition to be net zero across all scopes by 2040.

Overview

LEM was founded by Jean Pierre Etter in 1972. It is headquartered in Meyrin, Geneva with production plants in Beijing (China), Sofia (Bulgaria), Tokyo (Japan), Switzerland, and a soon-to-be-established plant in Penang (Malaysia). LEM’s regional sales offices are located near its customers’ locations which helps the company to offer a seamless service around the globe. LEM has been listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange since 1986 with the ticker LEHN.[2][3][4][5]

LEM’s goal is to utilize the intrinsic strengths of its core business to develop opportunities in existing and new markets with new applications. Its current and voltage sensors are utilized in a wide range of applications such as drives and welding, renewable energies, traction, power supplies, UPS, high precision, and conventional and green car businesses. LEM has a track record of over 50 years of being the market leader in electrical measurement with a team of dedicated and innovative engineers who develop the best solutions for energy and mobility and ensure that the customers’ systems are optimized, safe, and reliable. More than 1,700 employees are providing their services in 16 countries to serve customers around the world. LEM offers a large portfolio that includes more than 2,000 products, more than 240 product families, and covers the widest measurement range, from 0.005 to 24,000 Amps. It provides a full suite of current sensing solutions from semiconductor ICS up to complex and fully instrumented modules.

LEM is focused on playing a role in the decarbonization of the economy and the electrification trend by offering current sensing solutions that make the systems optimized and more efficient. The company has expertise in all technologies including Open loop, Closed loop, Fluxgate, and Rogowski coil. LEM works with five key businesses which include automation, automotive, renewable energies, track and energy distribution and High precision. Its current sensing solutions are used in six types of applications, which includes motor drives, power conversion, electrical safety, battery management, energy monitoring, and energy metering.

History

• 1972: Establishment of Liaisons Electroniques-Mécaniques LEM SA with a capital of 200,000 CHF, 17 shareholders

• 1982: Creation of LEM Holding SA with a capital of CHF 6.2 million

• 1985: Start of the CTN building (New Technology Centre) and Introduction of LEM on the Geneva stock-exchange

• 1986: City of Geneva Award for Industrial Merit

• 1988: Creation of the Japanese subsidiary Nippon LEM KK

• 1989: Formation of the Chinese joint venture company Beijing LEM

• 1997: 25th Anniversary of LEM Group. Reaching over CHF 100 million in total sales

• 2000: First customized ASIC-based closed-loop sensors for the automobile industry

• 2007: Launch of first LEM ICS sensor: FHS sensor

• 2011: Record of sales with over CHF 296 million in total sales

• 2012: 40th Anniversary of LEM Group

• 2013: LEM expands European manufacturing with a new facility in Bulgaria of 4,500 square meters, and creates 50 new jobs over there

• 2017: Creation of new R&D offices, LEM Tech France, in Saint-Priest (Lyon)

• 2020: New production plant in Penang, Malaysia[6]

• 2020: Launch of the first DC energy meter for fast charging stations[7]

• 2022: 50th anniversary of LEM Group[8]

• 2022: LEM announced record financial results for full-year 2021/2022[9]

• 2023: LEM announced record financial results for full-year 2022/2023.[10] The company celebrated the 10th anniversary of its presence in Bulgaria, and opened a new office in the center of Sophia for R&D activities
