Johanna Wacker is a singer-songwriter and roots musician based in New York City. She draws inspiration from classic country, Appalachian old-time music, bluegrass, blues, and the American folk revival.[1] Wacker's songwriting often blends stylistic elements resembling mountain music and old country, with a contemporary, urban flare.[2] Wacker’s primary instruments are banjo and guitar.[1]

Wacker's debut single, "You Wanted a Cowboy (But You Got Me)," came out in August of 2022.[3] Wacker writes, "I set out to craft an old-timey country lesbian heartbreak song about an experience many of us know all too well: falling for a straight woman."[4] In October of 2022, Wacker released “Guardian Angel Ring.” The song tells a story of a prophetic ring that has “no monetary value but nonetheless speaks truth to whoever wears it.”[5]

Wacker is currently working on her debut album, Garden Over Embers.[1] In 2022, she started posting original songs, traditional mountain music, and country covers on her TikTok account, which now has amassed over 20,000 followers.[6]

Wacker is a music teacher at Jalopy Theatre & School of Music in Brooklyn, NY.[7] She teaches banjo and guitar.
