Cruz Supat is a hybrid genre American rap artist/songwriter whose talents stem from his roots in Kingston Jamaica. He grew up in the “Southside” ghettos of Kingston, where he was surrounded by poverty and gang life. His exposure to music started at home and grew into a passion as he attended community street parties known as dancehall. He wanted to make a name for himself outside the common path of violence, and was inspired by music’s positive influence on the community.[1]

Biography

One notable incident in his early years, being pistol whipped on his way home from school, caused him to start wearing a mask publicly as a means of concealing emotions.

Cruz Supat was raised by his mother along with his two sisters. Information on his biological father is still unknown.

Career

Cruz Supat’s style of rap/hip-hop fuses the mainstream genre with elements of rock and trap, along with dancehall and reggae vibes originating from his native country, Jamaica. Real experiences are woven into his songs, a characteristic inspired by artists Buju Banton and Sizzla. His lyrical technique is influenced by artists such as Eminem, Vybz Kartel, and Rakim. All of his lyrics are rooted in personal experience, emboldened with his commentary on current events and how to live in a world full of moral conflicts. Though his message may be hopeful, it is cloaked in a dark depression reminiscent of Linkin Park and Disturbed. His fans have followed him for many years, but for the new listeners he debuts as “the unknown which is feared”, and reminds new audiences that misjudged imagery can spoil the message.[2]

Beginning

Born in downtown Kingston, Jamaica on Fleet Street and Tower Street, Cruz Supat was surrounded by a large and diverse music scene. Music of all genres played every day on the streets of his hometown, giving the community inspiration and motivation throughout their daily lives. His hobbies include photography, videography, and cooking traditional Jamaican dishes. Cruz Supat’s connection to music sparked one evening when he was only nine years old, when he used one of his few dollars to play “Black Woman & Child” by Sizzla on an old local jukebox. The appreciation for beats and lyrics never left him, and his gift in writing and performing has been a driving factor all his life.[3]
