Air China Flight 403 was a scheduled flight from Chengdu Tianfu International Airport in China to Singapore Changi Airport in Singapore. The aircraft had a engine failure and landed at Singapore Changi Airport. All 155 occupants survived, but 9 were injured either by inhaling the smoke or abrasions while evacuating.

Aircraft

The aircraft was a 2018 built Airbus A320-271neo powered by two Pratt and Whitney PW1127G-JM engines, with registration B-305J and serial number 8594.[1]

Accident

On September 10, 2023, the plane took off at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport. During the flight, the left engine of the Airbus A320-271neo had caught fire, resulting in smoke entering the plane’s forward cargo hold and lavatory. The pilots declared an emergency and requested a priority landing at 4:15 pm.[2] A video on Twitter showed footage recorded by the passenger during the emergency landing. In the video, there was smoke shown present throughout the cabin. Fortunately, all passengers were safely evacuated upon landing as emergency slides were deployed, and nine passengers sustained minor injuries related to smoke inhalation.[3][4][5][6][7]

Investigation

As of March 2024, the cause of the engine fire is still under investigation by the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau with assistance from its Chinese counterpart, the French BEA and the National Transportation Safety Board.[3] A preliminary investigation conducted by Air China claimed that the fire was caused by a mechanical fault in the engine.[8]

Aftermath

The runway the plane landed was closed for hours at Changi Airport.[9]
