Notes on Duncan D. Hunter's work on behalf of Mathew Golsteyn

Congressional Representative Duncan D. Hunter, himself a veteran of Iraq, worked on behalf of Golsteyn, and several other captives.

On March 15, 2015, Hunter lead an initiative to amend the 2016 defense budget/policy bill inspired by Army Secretary McHugh's clawing back of Golsteyn's Silver Star.[1][2][3] The amendment's intent is to restrict the authority of senior Pentagon officials to claw back the medals of service members, or veterans, unless they had been convicted of a crime. On July 19 Hunter convinced the other members of the House Committee on Armed Services to add that amendment.

According to the Washington Times Army Secretary John McHugh said Golsteyn “assassinated an unarmed Afghan.”[2]

On December 7, 2016, Hunter wrote an open letter to the Army leadership, on Golsteyn's behalf.[4] In this letter Hunter attributed to James Mattis, the man who incoming President Donald Trump planned to appoint to be Secretary of Defense, "There are some assholes in the world that just need to be shot."
