Soundsphere is an online and print magazine dedicated to everything alternative and rock in the North of England and worldwide.[1] It is a platform that provides opportunities for young people within the creative industries, across the North of England.[2]

History and overview

Soundsphere was founded by Dom Smith,[3] who holds an MA in Magazine Journalism from the University of Central Lancashire,[4] in 2008 and is now run by a team of other journalists with a worldwide team of freelancers. Smith set-up Soundsphere after interning and working for several music publications, including Rock Sound, NME.com, and T3. After working as the MIT Journalist in Residence in the United States, Smith is based in Yorkshire and the North of England, where he is responsible for running Soundsphere,[5][6] which has grown from a website showcasing local music around Yorkshire to one of the leading print and online music magazines in the North of England.[7]

The magazine showcases interviews, reviews, new national and international artists/products/clubs/models, competitions, events, blogs, and articles. It targets 18 to 40-year-olds with a balanced editorial approach to interest all fans of rock, metal, indie, punk, electronic, and goth music. Soundsphere endorses, recommends, and brings to the attention of over 4,000 engaged readers, the very best shops, events, galleries, music, and experiences.[8]

In September 2020, Soundsphere produced a mental health podcast, Keep Talking.[9]

Dom Smith, the editor of Soundsphere[10][11] and co-founder of Disabled Entrepreneurs, is the recipient of the 2012 National Diversity Award (NDA) for Entrepreneurial Excellence in the Disability category.[12] He also established Wobbling About and Rocking Out, a UK-based organization raising awareness of disabilities and mental health issues. Dom himself suffers from Cerebral Palsy and ADHD.[13]

Notable interviews

Soundsphere has conducted many interviews with famous personalities from different backgrounds like music and sports. Some of its notable interviewees include Joey Jordison,[14] Filter (band),[15] Angelspit,[16] Goldberg,[17] Brody King,[18] Raven,[19] Mick Foley, and Ric Flair.
