Robert “Rob” Anthony Martinez

Robert Anthony Martinez is an American entrepreneur and speaker.[1] He is the founder and co-former CEO of Shipware, LLC.,[2] an innovative parcel consulting and auditing firm. With extensive experience in carrier contract negotiations, benchmarking, carrier and mode optimization, and tech-enabled spend management analytics, Martinez is considered one of the foremost experts on all matters related to the parcel (FedEx, UPS, etc.) industry.[3][4]

Early life and education

Martinez was born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The third child of George and Jacqueline Martinez, he grew up in Los Angeles, California. In 1989, Martinez completed his Bachelor of Arts with a degree in Communications Studies from UCLA, where he consistently made Dean’s Honor List and graduated cum laude.[5]

Martinez has more than three decades of experience in the transportation industry. He started his consulting career in the parcel industry in 2001, and he also worked in executive positions at Airborne Express[6] and Stamps.com.[7][8]

Martinez actively consults for all matters related to the parcel shipping industry, supporting financial market analysts, carriers, shippers, academicians, and M&A advisory teams. He is considered an expert in the following categories/topics: Parcel procurement and pricing; carrier financial performance and market trends; US Postal Service, Regional parcel carriers, consolidators, and final mile providers; eCommerce shipping strategies; best practices in parcel shipping; and Amazon Shipping and Logistics. Martinez helps these groups by providing due diligence support, supplying historical data, preparing presentations for public consumption, analyzing market share and services, or simply answering questions.

Martinez is also a founder and former CEO of Shipware, LLC. Headquartered in San Diego, it is a technology-enabled transportation company that has become one of the fastest-growing and most successful businesses in the U.S., a multiple INC 5000 award recipient, and was named 2020’s Best Workplaces by Inc. Magazine.[9][10] The company has a track record in modifying numerous brands by reducing parcel and LTL shipping costs by 10-30% with no disruption to current operations. It also offers superior audit and consulting services to cause bottom-line savings quickly. Shipware has launched proprietary software which plays a significant role in increasing operations and improving carrier pricing by providing insights and data points culled through a combination of factors to the customers.[11] Shipware was acquired by SIB Holdings in October 2021. Martinez was a key investor in SIB Holdings and an active member of the Board of Directors until the company was again sold in November 2023.[12][13][14][15]

In 2001, Martinez founded MSMA San Diego, the largest national non-profit organization that works on the growth of print, mail, fulfillment, facilities management, and shipping/distribution. He was the President until 2015 and remained on the Board of Directors as immediate Past President. He was on numerous MSMA national boards and took charge of the Education Committee that developed several certification programs. In 2006, Martinez was awarded a Certified Mail & Distribution Systems Supplier (CMDSS) designation from MSMA.

Martinez has addressed numerous industry conferences, including Parcel Forum, Operations Summit, Customized Logistics and Delivery Association (CLDA), MAILCOM, National Postal Forum, Institute for Supply Management, NASSTRAC, National Association of Purchasing Managers, National Association of College and University Mail Services (NACUMS), Association of Independent Mail Equipment Dealers (AIMED), Mail Expo, Postal Customer Councils, and MSMA. He covers topics related to negotiating the best-in-class parcel rates and how to make shipping a profit center.[16]
