A restraint chair is a controversial tool, used by jailers, to control or punish prisoners.

In 2005 and 2006 Ron DeSantis, currently governor of Florida and running for the Republican Party's candidate for President in the 2024 elections, served as a military lawyer at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. One of his duties was to enable guards to lock prisoners immobile during their force-feedings.

Former prisoners report DeSantis came to watch their tortuous force-feedings.

In 2016 the Australian Broadcasting Corporation broadcast a news show illustrating the chair being used to restrain Australian prisoners at a youth facility that triggered widespread discussion.
