Mirza Hasanuzzaman /মীর্জা হাছানুজ্জামান (born September 10, 1978) is a Bangladeshi Agriculturist, Researcher and Professor of Agronomy at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is the only Bangladeshi-affiliated author named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate AG. He is a fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS), Royal Society of Biology, Linnean Society of London, International Society of Environmental Botanists, and a Foreign fellow of The Society for Science of Climate Change and Sustainable Environment. Prof. Hasanuzzaman’s current research foci include the crop responses to climate change and physiological and molecular mechanisms of environmental stress tolerance (salinity, drought, flood, and heavy metals/metalloids). Over the years of research, he established himself as a leading researcher in the field of plant physiology. Prof. Hasanuzzaman published over 250 articles in the high-profile international peer-reviewed journals. He edited over 20 books and contributed 50 book chapters on important aspects of plant physiology, plant abiotic stress tolerance, and crop production. He received many awards and recognition, which are mainly but not limited to the World Academy of Science (TWAS) Young Scientist Award 2014, University Grants Commission (UGC) Gold Medal 2018, Global Network of Bangladeshi Biotechnologists (GNOBB) Award 2021, Society for Plant Research Young Scientist Award (Agriculture)-2023, Distinguished Scientists Award (2020) from AETDS, India and Pathikrit Science Award 2022.

Biography

Mirza Hasanuzzaman (Ph.D.) is a Professor of Agronomy at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Hons.) from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, where he achieved First Class, received a Gold Medal for being first in his class, and earned a Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Award. He also completed a Master of Science in Agronomy from the same university, where he was once again at top of his class with a CGPA 4.0. Dr. Hasanuzzaman started his scientific career as a Lecturer in the Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in June 2006. He was promoted to the position of Professor in June 2017. In 2012, he received his Ph.D. with a dissertation on ‘Plant Stress Physiology and Antioxidant Metabolism’ from the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Ehime University, Japan with a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship. Later, he completed his postdoctoral research in the Center of Molecular Biosciences (COMB), University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan with a ‘Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)’ postdoctoral fellowship. Subsequently, he became an Adjunct Senior Researcher at the University of Tasmania with an Australian Government’s Endeavour Research Fellowship. Prof. Hasanuzzaman has over 300 Scopus-indexed publications and among them 200 in the Web of Science (Web of Science ResearcherID: A-1665-2010). He has edited over 20 books and written over 30 book chapters on important aspects of plant physiology, plant stress responses, and environmental problems in relation to plant species. His publications are cited over 15000 times as per Scopus with an h-index of 65 (as of March 2023)[1]. He is an Editor and a reviewer for more than 50 peer-reviewed international journals and the recipient of ‘Publons Peer Review Award 2017, 2018, and 2019’. He is acting Associate Editor of Plant Signaling & Behavior (Taylor and Francis), Frontiers in Plant Science (Switzerland), and Phyton (Tech Science Press, USA); Academic Editor of PeerJ (USA), Vegetos (Springer); and Member of the Editorial Board of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry (Elsevier), Scientific Reports (Nature), Annals of Agricultural Sciences (Elsevier), Communicative and Integrative Biology (Taylor & Francis) and so on. He is an active member of 40 professional societies and is the acting Treasurer of the Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association. Early Life and Career

Mirza Hasanuzzaman was born in 1978 in Barikhala village of Nabinagar Upazila in the districts of Brahmanbaria. His father, Mizanur Rahman, was a Government Employee and mother, Halima Khatun was a housewife. His parents were not very highly educated but they had a passion and the determination for their son. He didn’t really have a vision for himself as no one in his village was so successful in academia. He completed his elementary education in different parts of Bangladesh as his father was being posted frequently. He finished his secondary education at Fatehpur K.G. High School, situated in a rural area, and passed S.S.C. exam with first Division and Star Marks. After completing the secondary education he came to Dhaka for Higher Secondary Education and passed H.S.C. with first Division. Subsequently, he got his admission at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka and passed the most memorable parts of his life. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Hons.) from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, where he achieved First Class, received a Gold Medal for being first in his class, and earned a Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Award. He also completed a Master of Science in Agronomy from the same university, where he was once again at top of his class with a CGPA 4.0 on a scale of 4.0. Before completing his master's degree he worked as a part-time teacher in the same department he studied. He joined as a Lecturer in the Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in June 2006. He was then promoted to Assistant Professor (June 2008), Associate Professor (June 2013), and finally Professor (June 2017). In 2012, he received his Ph.D. with a dissertation on ‘Plant Stress Physiology and Antioxidant Metabolism’ from the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Ehime University, Japan with a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship. Mirza Hasanuzzaman married Kamrun Nahar in July 2006. She is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural Botany at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Kamrun Nahar did her Masters Ph.D. in plant physiology at Kagawa and Ehime University in 2013 and 2016, respectively. She is one of the renowned researchers in the field of Plant Physiology and an Associate Fellow[12] of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. They have two sons - Mirza Arian Zaman (born, 2010) and Mirza Ahyan Zaman (born, 2018).

Prof. Hasanuzzaman published over 250 articles in the high-profile international peer-reviewed journals. He edited over 20 books and written over 50 book chapters on important aspects of plant physiology, plant stress tolerance, and crop production. These books have been published by world-renowned publishers such as Springer, Elsevier, CRC Press, and Wiley. According to Google Scholar, Prof. Hasanuzzaman’s publications have already received over 23,000 citations with an h-index of 78 and an i10-index of 235. As per Elsevier’s Scopus database (2020), he is among the top 2% of scientists in the world based on the citation (https://doi.org/10.17632/btchxktzyw.4). His laboratory publishes at least 20 articles every year in internationally reputed journals.
