Mark Edward Shaw (born October 12, 1970) is an American ordained minister,[1] nouthetic counselor,[2] addiction counselor,[3] author, public speaker, and seminary instructor. He is the Founder and President of The Addiction Connection and the Director of Counseling at Grace Fellowship Church in Florence, Kentucky.

Early Life and Education

Shaw was born in Louisville, Kentucky, to Ronny and Sandra Shaw and was brought up in Louisville, Kentucky, and Mobile, Alabama. His father told him about Jesus at a young age, so he became a follower of Christ. When he was 9, his family moved to Alabama, where he spent the next 35 years of his life.

Shaw graduated from Baker High School in 1988. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with an English minor from the University of South Alabama in 1992. He completed his Master of Science in Education Psychology from Florida State University in Tallahassee in 1995.[4]

He discovered leaders in biblical counseling and learned about pastoral care, which gave him a passion for ministry, specifically in addictions counseling. Soon after, he received a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Birmingham Theological Seminary in 2004.[4] He earned a Doctor of Ministry in Biblical Counseling[4][5][6] from the same seminary in 2008, completing his authored dissertation titled Speaking the Truth in Love in the Local Church. He holds certifications from three different counseling organizations ACBC,[6][7] IABC, and AADAA.[5][8]

Career

Shaw's addiction ministry began in 1991 when he worked in the Mobile mental health system. He also worked as an addiction counselor and the Program Director of a methadone clinic from 1994 to 1998.[2] He served as the Clinical Director of a residential program from 1998 to 2001. In the mid-2000s, he worked briefly at a methadone clinic before becoming the office manager of a church's biblical counseling ministry in Montgomery. He accepted a counselor's position at a church in Birmingham and, concurrently, a senior pastor's role at a local church in a neighboring city.

In 2008, Shaw started a nonprofit ministry, Truth in Love (TIL), a network of biblical counselors and ministries that offer training for helping those struggling with addiction.[5][9][10] With headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, TIL existed to give churches the tools necessary to start up their counseling ministries. During that time, Shaw began writing books. He released his first book in 2008, titled The Heart of Addiction: A Biblical Perspective.[11] In 2012, TIL concentrated its mission on addiction counseling, changing its name officially in 2019 to The Addiction Connection (TAC).[9] For the next year, Shaw, along with Shirley Crowder and the leadership of TAC, sought to gather and mobilize a team of leaders to start a commissioning organization for counselors seeking growth in addiction counseling. Thus, the Commissioned Addictions Biblical Counselor (CABC) process was born.

In 2013, Shaw moved to Lafayette, Indiana, to serve with Faith Church and become the Director of Vision of Hope Residential Treatment Center.[5][8]

In 2018, he became the Director of Counseling at Grace Fellowship Church in Florence, Kentucky.[1][6][9]

In February 2020, he began hosting The Addiction Connection Podcast,[12][13] which aired 100 episodes in 2020.

Shaw teaches several courses, such as the disciple-making program for addicts, Next Steps: Be Transformed, launched in 2020 as a curriculum for addiction leaders to utilize in their programs, churches, or home settings. This curriculum includes 16 months of content taught by Shaw for those seeking biblical and gospel-focused recovery. Another group curriculum taught by Shaw is Family Help for Addiction: A Care Group Study, which gives churches a means to reach out to family members of addicts in their community.
