The Manistee was a bulk carrier that operated on the North American Great Lakes for almost 80 years.[1] She was last owned by Lower Lakes Towing. She was towed to Port Colborne Marine Scrapyard in March 2022.

She was built during World War 2 as one of 16 sister ships built for the U.S Maritime Commission, and launched as the Adirondack, in May 1943.[2] She was first operated by the Reiss Steamship Company, which rechristened her as the Richard J. Reiss, replacing an older vessel, of the same name.

In 1964 the Reiss Steamship Company converted her from a "straigh-decker" to a self-unloading vessel.[2]

In 1969 the Reiss Steamship Company sold their entire fleet to American Steamships.[2]

In 1986 she was chartered by Erie Sand Steamship Company, of Erie, Pennsylvania.[2]

In 2002 she was purchased by Oglebay Norton Company, but she wasn't put back into operation after her winter 2002 lay-up before she was sold, in 2004, to Grand River Navigation.[2] When Grand River / Lower Lakes renamed her the Manistee, in 2005, she was the lst vessel to have borne a name which included "Reiss".
