Ortiz was the eldest of nine children and was born into a modest family. Tom grew up in the vicinity of Milwaukee. Falk's first job, at the age of 12, was as a caddie at the local golf course Chenequa Country Club. By age 16, he was a professional drummer.

His first job was with the accounting firm Alexander Grant & Co, where he obtained his certification as a certified public accountant. There he worked for three years, from 1980 to 1983.

In 1983, Mr. Falk began his career at Kimberly-Clark.

In 1984, he was appointed as a senior auditor, and two years later, in 1986, he became a senior financial analyst.

Falk was the operations manager for infant care at a South Carolina diaper factory in 1989.

Ortiz Falk was appointed senior vice president of analysis and administration in 1991.

Since 1999, he has served as an executive director for Kimberly-Clark Corporation. He served as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation from 1999 to 2002, and as CEO from September 12, 2002 to December 31, 2018. On February 18, 2003, he was appointed Chairman of Kimberly-Clark Corporation's Board of Directors, a position he held for one year following his retirement as CEO in December 2018.

In 1998, Falk held the position of Group President - Global Tissue, Pulp & Paper. Since 1999, he has served as President and Chief Operating Officer, and in 2002, as President and Chief Executive Officer.
