Leslie Barns (formerly known as Ashbridges Bay Streetcar Maintenance & Storage Facility)[1] is a light rail vehicle storage and maintenance facility under construction for the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to house and service its 204 Flexity Outlook light rail vehicles.[2]
Six sites were considered and Toronto City Council made the final choice of surplus land at Ashbridges Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant, at the southeast corner of Leslie Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, on November 11, 2009. While the existing Roncesvalles Carhouse and Russell Carhouse will house some of the vehicles, the maintenance facilities at these older facilities cannot accommodate the new vehicles, which are considerably longer than the TTC's current streetcar fleet.[3][4][5][6]
The site is 22 acres and construction was projected to cost $345 million CAD in June 2009.[5] The carhouse will cover 4.3 acres.[7] The first of the new streetcar vehicles are scheduled to enter service in 2013–2014, and the carhouse is scheduled to be ready to service them.[4]
The facility will include a 250 metre brake test track.[7]
Construction of the spur, from the facility, to Queen Street, began in September 2013.[8][9] The construction was projected to require 12 weeks of road closures.
The other five sites under consideration were[2]:
- one east of Heward Avenue, between Eastern Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard;
- two on Commissioners Street, just east and just west of the turning basin;
- two on Unwin Avenue, the first just east of Regatta Road, and the other the western portion of the old Hearn Generating Station property.
The facility is budgeted at $497 million CAD.[10]
