Jerono P Rotich

Jerono Phylis Rotich (born July 17, 1969) is a Kenyan American educator, administrator, mentor, and motivational speaker. She is an avid advocate of women and youth empowerment, diversity, equity and inclusion, and health behavior modification.[1]

Early Life and Education

Rotich was born to Joseph Cheruiyot Rotich and Agnes Chepkeitany Kimoning Rotich in Kenya. She graduated from Kenya High School and Loreto Matunda. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education at Kenyatta University in 1994 and a Master of Science degree in Physical Education at the State University of New York (SUNY) in 1999. In 2004, Rotich received her Ph.D. in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG).[2][3][4]

Career

Since August 2022, Rotich has been a tenured Full Professor and the Associate Dean for Organizational Climate, Inclusion, and Belonging in the School of Public Health-Bloomington, Indiana University, Bloomington. Under her role, she is required to carry out schoolwide diversity and inclusion efforts, including implementing the School's Diversity Plan 2020 and promoting organizational culture and climate respecting individuals and multiculturalism through seminars, town halls, and workshops.[5][6] She has served as a tenured Full Professor and Department Chair of Kinesiology and Recreation Administration at North Carolina University.[2][7][8][9]

She is the Founder and CEO of the Kenya Students in Diaspora (KESID) Foundation,[10] a non-profit organization established to advance the academic success and career growth of Kenyan students living in the US through mentoring, cross-cultural training, networking, scholarship empowerment, scholarship, service learning, and community engagement. Rotich played an instrumental role in founding the Diaspora University by contributing to establishing the Human Performance and Leisure Studies department, writing courses and teaching, integrating sports and education, research, and funding.[11]

Rotich is the CEO and Founder of WOYO (Women & Youth) Global Diversity,[1] which empowers, mentors, and inspires youth and women who aspire to make a difference in today's interconnected global world. It provides mentorship, workshops, symposiums and conference, competency training, first AID, CPR, AED certifications, luncheons, clubs, and sports events.

Rotich is the President of the Kenya Scholars and Studies Association.[9][10][12]

In 2020, she was awarded a fellowship by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program.[10] She is a Research Fellow at the Center for New North Carolinians, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina. In June 2020, she was appointed as a Commissioner, Commission of Research and Publication at the International Council of Traditional Sports and GAMES (ICTSG), established at the 2018 UNESCO Collective Consultation on Traditional Sports and Games.[2][9][13]

Rotich is a board member at the CATCH Kenya, a US and Kenya collaborative initiative to implement evidence-based health and physical education programs in Kenyan schools. She is a member of the editorial board for the QUEST Journal and the Kenya Studies Review-Journal,[1] a member of the Leadership Institute Committee at the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE), and a member of the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE) Nominations and Elections Committee. She is the Committee Chair of the Hellison Interdisciplinary Research Grant at the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE).[14][15]

In May 2017, Rotich was invited as a keynote speaker at the Educational Researches and Publications Associations (ERPA) International Congress on Education held in Budapest, Hungary, on Educating Immigrant and refugee students in the USA: Challenges and opportunities.[3] She was invited to give a presentation at the 4th UNESCO Collective Consultation Meeting on the Safeguarding and Promotion of Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) in Istanbul, Turkey. She served as a US delegate on the World Forum for Reviving Traditional Sports in Antalya, Turkey, and Uganda's 2018 Global Peace Leadership Conference (GPLC).

Her research agenda focuses on physical activity, sports and games, obesity, and behavior modification as viable solutions to decreasing health disparities and obesity in African American, immigrant, refugee, and other minority communities. She has received funding to develop and implement college and community-based physical activity intervention programs. She has contributed to community engagement and managing community-based programs among immigrant and refugee communities. She has developed and implemented numerous funded community programs that address health-related disparities, including physical activity, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles among underserved youth, African Americans, and immigrant and refugee communities. In addition, she has been instrumental in developing, implementing, and facilitating cross-cultural competency workshops for health care providers, social workers, and behavioral health specialists in North Carolina.[11]

Rotech is also a handball, soccer, and hockey coach,[4] serving as Head Coach for two varsity teams.[11] She is currently serving as a consultant for The Gambia Institution of Sports and Kinesiology.
