Janet Levine (born December 16, 1945) is a South African-born American author, educator, and non-profit entrepreneur.

Early Life and Education

Levine was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Levine attended Parktown Girls High School, Johannesburg, matriculating in 1963. She received a B.A. degree with majors in English and History and a sub-major in Archeology from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1967; her post-graduate teacher’s diploma from the Transvaal College of Education with a mini-thesis on Maria Montessori and Rudolf Steiner (1967) and her B.A. Honors degree from the University of South Africa in 1973.[1]

Career

Author

Levine has decades as a self-employed writer and 36 years of experience in education.

She has published in magazines and professional journals as a writer in South Africa and the United States. Her work has appeared in The New York Times Sunday Magazine; Yale Review; Boston Globe; Boston Phoenix; and The Sowetan, a black newspaper in which Levine was the only white journalist with a column (1978-1981).[2][3][4] She is a book reviewer for the online New York Journal of Books.[1]

Levine is the author of five published books, including Reading Matters (2022),[5] nominated for the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award for Nonfiction 2022; Know Your Parenting Personality (2004); The Enneagram Intelligences (1999),[6] nominated for the 2002 Grawemeyer Education Award; memoir Inside Apartheid (1988);[7] and Leela’s Gift (2010).[8][9] These books are translated into several languages and reviewed in The New York Times Book Review, The New York Review of Books, and The Yale Review.[2][3]

Levine’s sixth book, Liv’s Secrets (2023), a historical saga featuring the Weisz family and centering the third-generation Liv Weisz, is a deep dive into the Jewish immigrant experience in South Africa between 1890 to 1960.

Levine was interviewed by Terri Gross on Fresh Air about her work and has appeared on many TV outlets.

Educator and Presenter

Between 1963 and 1966, Levine taught at African Night School at the University of the Witwatersrand. She also taught English and history at Krugersdorp High School (1968) and Marist Brothers’ College, Linmeyer (1969–1972) in Johannesburg.

From 1986 to 2014, Levine served as a member of the English faculty at Milton Academy in Massachusetts,[10] teaching philosophy, literature, and writing courses.[4] In June 2014, she retired from her teaching career to concentrate on writing.

Levine is a member of The Authors Guild, a professional organization for writers.[1][5]

Levine leads workshops and presents programs internationally on reading and writing the Enneagram personality model and current events in South Africa.

As an anti-apartheid journalist and activist, she is an expert on South African politics. She was also a member of several anti-apartheid organizations, including the Black Sash.

Non-Profit Entrepreneur

Levine has founded several non-profit organizations in South Africa and the United States, including The Independent Schools South Africa Education Program, the Enneagram Teachers Association, Transforming Teaching Workshops, and Ma-Afrika Taxi Ltd.[1]

Recognition

Levine was twice elected (1977 and 1982) to the Johannesburg City Council to represent the Progressive Federal Party.[4]

She was nominated for the Grawemeyer Award in Education (2000) and the IBPA Ben Franklin Award (2022) and was awarded Writing Residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) and The Hambidge Center.[2][1]

Levine has been recognized by Worldwide Who’s Who for Excellence in Writing and Education.
