Jamalpur District
District History
To get a proper view of the history of Jamalpur district, there is a need to remember the names of the two famous pious Muslim people of Hazrat Shah Jamal (RA) and Hazrat Shah Kamal (RA). To spread the Islam the religion of peace Hazrat Shah Jamal (RA) came to Jamalpur from Yemen during the reign of King Akbor of Delhi. The original name of the city of Jamalpur is Singhjani. There is no mouza, village hat and bazaar in the name of Hazrat Shah Jamal (RA). It is a great fortune for us that the shrine of this blessed person is located in Jamalpur town. The district has been named after his holy name.
Hazrat Shah Jamal (RA)'s Mazar Sharif
Jamalpur got the status of first Mahakuma in Mymensingh district in 1845. 133 years after the creation of the Mahamuka got the status of district on 26 December 1978. Movement for the formation of Jamalpur District was originally indicated in 1912 after the partition of Bengal. In 1912, Lord Curzon announced to make Jamalpur as district. In 1919, Nawab Ali Chowdhury of Dhanbari proposed to make Dhanbari district headquarters and a district with Jamalpur and Tangail. But no party supported Jamalpur and Tangaila. In 1908 Sher-E-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, as the Sub-Divisional Commissioner of Jamalpur, the demand for Jamalpur district became even more strong. In 1917, to establish Jamalpur district headquarters, the government acquired 235 acres of land in Jamalpur Municipality area. In 1920, some villages of Gopalpur Thana of Tangail district were combined with Sarishabari Thana. In 1938, the demand for district sponsored Jamalpur district by the initiative of the people of the vicinity spread among the people of all walks of life. Jamalpur or Tangail, where the district headquarters will be establish even the British government could not make proper decision. During this period, the implementation of Jamalpur district was delayed due to floods, communal riots. Although there were many influential leaders of the Congress and Muslim League, at that time they could not see the implementation of Jamalpur district due to their conflicts, they have failed to up hold the necessity of setting up Jamalpur as a district. For these reasons, Jamalpur district took about 133 years to establish.
On 10 December, 1971 the Jamalpur was relieved from the invading army of Pakisthan. The demand for district Jamalpur became more vigorous after the independence of Bangladesh. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman promised to make Jamalpur district in 1975. On December 26, 1978, a happy day for the people of Jamalpur. Because on this day Jamalpur was declared as the 20th District of independent Bangladesh.
Among those public officials who have made special contribution to the establishment of Jamalpur District, Mr. Keramat Ali, Cabinet Secretary; Mr. Khane Alam Khan, Divisional Commissioner, Dhaka; Mr. Badiur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner, Mymensingh; Mr. Abdur Rashid, Mohakuma Administrator, Jamalpur and others.
