HeyGen is an American software company[1] that has developed a video-generating platform that converts text-to-video using artificial intelligence and machine learning.[2][3]

History

HeyGen (originally Movio) was co-founded in 2020 by Joshua Xu, an ex-Snapchat engineer, and Wayne Liang, an ex-Smule product designer. The company has raised a total of $9 million in funding so far including the $5.4 million raised on 29th November, 2023.[4][5][6]

HeyGen is an innovative video platform that uses generative AI to streamline the video creation process. It allows users to create professional videos without expensive equipment, actors, or complex editing tools.[7]

HeyGen is SOC 2 compliant, ensuring the highest security standards.

HeyGen made its public debut on July 29th, 2022, and achieved an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $1 million and a ramen-profitable state in just 217 days.[8][9]

Features

HeyGen is primarily known for its browser-based, AI-assisted text-to-video software, which can produce spokesperson videos by synthesizing vocal emotion and intonation.[10] The software has over 300 customizable templates for various industries and purposes. The company released several additional tools, resulting in a more realistic and human-like inflection.[11]

AI avatars are the company’s feature for creating virtual actors that mimic human behavior with gestures and lip-synching according to text. Users can use the pre-designed avatars or create one from scratch. AI avatars can deliver content in over 40 languages, and users can choose from a diverse collection of over 100+ avatars representing various ethnicities, ages, poses, and attire. Moreover, HeyGen's editor also lets you adjust lightings of the AI generated video.[12][13]

In September 2023, HeyGen launched a video translator that can convert video audio into 40 different languages. The company’s voice cloning feature allows users to apply their customized voice to their created avatar. The voice cloning feature is powered by ElevenLabs, allowing users to upload custom voice samples in eight languages to create new vocal styles. The app features TalkingPhoto in collaboration with Canva, allowing users to infuse their photos with a human voice, transforming them from static visuals into dynamic, animated ones.[14]

HeyGen use cases span a range of sectors.

HeyGen can create videos across several sectors, including how-to, explainer, or tutorial videos, product and business marketing videos, eLearning videos, training videos, and news videos. The platform has been used by several brands, such as Amazon, WIX, Accenture, Salesforce, Volvo, Keller Williams, Nvidia, and Pattern, among others.

Integration

In August 2023, HeyGen teamed up with Canva, introducing AI avatars to Canva designs.[15][16]

HeyGen offers a Zapier integration that allows users to connect HeyGen to over 5,000 other apps, an API for automatic workflows, and integration with other AI tools like SalesBlink. HeyGen can be integrated with popular apps like Google Sheets, Gmail, Slack, Trello, Asana, HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp, Typeform, and SurveyMonkey using Zapier.[17]

Reception

Following its launch, HeyGen gained rapid momentum and was commended for its AI avatar, voice cloning feature, high-quality animations, user-friendly interface, and automatic video generation capabilities. HeyGen's dubbing service has received positive reactions from users speaking different languages. The dubbing seems natural, and the technology can adapt lips to dialogue, making the dubbed video not only audible but also visually credible.[18]

HeyGen has received positive user reviews on G2 and Product Hunt. The product has amassed over 25 million impressions since its release.[19][20]
