Frank Mann (born April 22, 1950) is an American artist known for his work in painting and printmaking. He is also an educator and writer.[1][2][3][4] Mann is the founder of Frank Mann Studio in New York.[5][1][3][4][6]

Early life and education

Frank Mann was born on April 22, 1950 in Washington, D.C.. Mann received a Bachelor of Science degree from High Point University in 1972.[5][7] He pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree at The George Washington University, which he obtained in 1978.[5][7][1] Mann studied at Columbia University and pursued his education at the Whitney Graduate Seminars in Contemporary Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 1980-1981.[5][7][1] In 1981, he was presented with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.[5][1]

Mann interned with the renowned artist Dorothea Rockburne in 1986.[7] In recognition of his contributions to the art world, he received an Honorary Associate Degree from the Accademia Italia in Arte nel Mondo Associazione Culturale in Lecce, Italy in 2017.[5][7]

Career

Frank Mann's work has been included in exhibitions on six continents, including international exhibitions, biennials, and triennials.[2][3] He has exhibited in the US and Europe, with major shows held in cities such as New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Miami, and Seattle.[2][3] Mann has held over twenty-five one-person exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions.[1]

Mann's artwork is represented in the permanent collections of renowned institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The National Gallery, Berlin; The Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires, Argentina; and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Nice, France.

Mann served as the illustrator for the book titled Nerves, and he also contributed the text for the film Eye of the Painter in 1992.[5][7] His artwork has been featured in books and publications in various countries, including Italy, UK, Portugal, Germany, France, Austria, Poland, Japan, and the United States.[3][8][6] Mann has also made contributions as an educator, sharing his insights on contemporary art.[5][7]

Mann's work is characterized by its abstract nature, use of vibrant colors, and incorporation of varied mediums. His work style has made him a figure in the contemporary art scene. His artworks have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world,[9][10] including platforms such as the Interchurch Center and Saatchi Art.[11][12]

Recognized for his global impact on the art world, Mann was named the "Top Global Impact Artist of the Year".[13] He was also selected as the "Top Male Artist of the Decade" by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).[1][4]

Oculus paintings and exhibitions

Mann has completed six series of artwork, including the Oculus cycle.[9][11][2][14] The most recent work within this series explores the theme of vision and visual perception. The Oculus paintings have been exhibited at various galleries in New York, Paris, and Rome. Currently, some of his paintings are featured in the "Personal Structures - Identities" Exhibition at Palazzo Bembo in Venice, Italy, as part of the European Cultural Centre Event during the 58th Venice Biennale.

Publications

Contributed to exhibition catalogs, including museum catalogs, issues of Blast magazine, and portfolios such as the Notebook of COLAB Arts.[7] Published articles in professional journals, such as NAP Text(s), including "The Optical Machine".[5] Essays featured in books like the American Society of Contemporary Artists. Created the book Oculus, A Survey Exhibition for the Broome Street Gallery, New York[5][4]
