Tom Jackson is the Chief of Police of Ferguson, Missouri since 2010. Jackson became of prominence in the aftermath of the shooting of Michael Brown and the police response to the unrest in Ferguson that followed.

Career

He was a member of the St. Louis Police Department for more than 30 years, and served as commander of the St. Louis County Drug Task Force. He was also a SWAT team supervisor, and an instructor pilot. Between 2002 and 2009, Jackson served as a commissioner with the Municipal Parks Grant Commission.[1]

Jackson received an associate's degree in Applied Life Science from Saint Louis Community College, a bachelor of science in Criminal Justice Management from Tarkio College and a certificate in Criminal Justice Education from University of Virginia. Jackson also graduated on the 221st Session of the FBI National Academy.[1]

Jackson received a St. Louis Police Department Meritorious Service Citation and a White House Office of National Drug Control Policy recognition for Outstanding Task Force Commander.[2]

In September 2014, the US Department of Justice announced an investigation into Chief Jackson's department.[3]

Shooting of Michael Brown

In 2014, Jackson became of prominence in the aftermath of the shooting of Michael Brown and the police response to the unrest that followed.[4]

In the aftermath of the shooting, the Department of Justice initiated a civil rights investigation to examine concerns about the Ferguson Police Department's policing practices, as well as reviewing the department’s internal investigations of use of force during the last four years.[5][6]
