Curtis Dickman (born August 4, 1959) is an American researcher, author, editor, artist, musician,[1] painter,[1] Ironman triathlete,[1] teacher, medical legal expert, a humanitarian, and retired neurosurgeon,[2][3][4][5] recognized internationally for his pioneering work in the fields of Spinal Surgery, Surgery of the Craniocervical Junction, Spinal Biomechanics, and Thoracoscopic Neurosurgery.[6][7] He was the Founder of the Spinal Biomechanics Research Laboratory, the Director of Spine Research, the Associate Chief of the Spine Section, and the Volker Sonntag Endowed Chair of Spinal Surgery at Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI).[8][9][10] He had also served as the Professor of Neurosurgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute,[1] The University of Arizona, and Creighton University.[11]

Education

Dickman received his B.S. in Psychology with high honors from Arizona State University in 1981 and his M.D. with honors from the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, in 1985.[2][11][12][13][14][15][16]

Between 1986 and 1992, Dickman received Residency Training in Neurological Surgery at Barrow Neurological Institute[2][12][14][10] and was one of the first groups of residents to get trained under Drs. Robert Spetzler and Volker Sonntag. After completing his training, Dickman joined the faculty of the Department of Neurosurgery, specializing in neurosurgery of the spine.[3][4][11][7]

In 1991, he completed a fellowship in Spinal Neurosurgery at the University of Florida.[2][7][11][12][10]

In 1995, he earned board certification from the American Board of Neurological Surgery[2][14][16] and also from the National Board of Medical Examiners.[11]

Career

Neurosurgery

In the early 1990s, Dickman initiated the development and popularization of endoscopic-assisted spine procedures within neurosurgery. He pioneered the field of thoracoscopic neurosurgery, becoming one of the first neurosurgeons to use endoscopes for treating diseases of the thoracic spine via a minimally invasive method.[7][17][18]

He translated a relatively new technology utilized in the cardiothoracic surgical sub-specialty for neurosurgical purposes. He developed several basic instruments used today by neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons for minimally invasive thoracic spinal procedures. Thoracoscopic spine surgery has since become a common treatment modality for many neurosurgical pathologies, including Herniated Thoracic Discs and more. Dr. Dickman was recognized as the most prolific thoracoscopic spine surgeon in the world and has written the only textbook on the subject.[7]

Dickman had performed several miraculous surgeries that were supposed to be hopeless by other medical surgeons. In 1998, he treated the baseball pitcher Billy Wagner and made national headlines in 2003 when he helped save an 18-year-old patient Marcos Parra whose skull was ripped from his cervical spine in an automobile accident.[1][19] One of his most acclaimed surgeries was that of David Cooper, the baseball player who got thoracic disc herniation while playing in a match in 2013. When his hopes shattered on consulting with several doctors, he visited Dickman, who successfully repaired his disc, spearheading the endoscopic approach. Within a year, Cooper was able to play in the field.[1][17][20][21] Dickman adopted the technique of minimally invasive thoracoscopic spinal discectomy and fusion surgery for Cooper's treatment which gained recognition and appeared in several news stories.[1]

In addition to his work on Thoracoscopic procedures, Dickman has published several textbooks and research papers on the craniocervical junction. He is well known for the Sonntag-Dickman Fusion, a special method of fusing the upper cervical spine.[22][23][7]

Dickman served as the Clinical Associate Professor in the division of Neurosurgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and was a member of the Master and Doctoral Supervisory Committees in the Department of Chemical, Biomechanical, and Materials Engineering at Arizona State University Graduate College in Tempe, AZ.[11]

He has held several leadership positions in the field of neurosurgery and spinal surgery at several societies,[24] including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), The Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). He served as a Scientific Reviewer and Chairman of the Scientific Program Committees of the North American Spine Society (NASS),[25][24] the Joint Spine Section of the AANS and CNS (1996),[26] the Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.[11] He was also a medical consultant and physician reviewer for the Arizona Medical Board.

Dickman served on the editorial boards of several medical journals, including the Journal Spine, for which he was the Senior Deputy Editor between 2000 and 2015. He was also the scientific reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, Spine, SurgicaI Oncology, Neuroorthopedics, Contemporary Neurosurgery, Neurosurgical Focus, Techniques in Neurosurgery, Spine Universe, Journal of Neurooncology, and Journal of Spinal Disorders and Techniques. He was also a member of the Editorial Board for NeuroOrthopedics and Contemporary Neurosurgery.[11]

Dickman had regularly taught residents, fellows, medical students, practicing neurosurgeons, and orthopedic spine surgeons. He was the visiting professor at several neurosurgery training programs worldwide and universities, including Emory University, Georgia (1996); Loyola University, Illinois (1996); University of Utah, Utah (1997); University of Miami, Florida (2000); Catholic University of Rome, Italy (2004); University of Wisconsin (2005); and New York University (2006).[11]

He participated as a lead investigator in several FDA-IDE studies and holds patents on spinal devices.

His clinical and research expertise was diverse and mainly focused on spinal surgery. His primary interests involved the upper cervical spine, craniovertebral junction,[27] spinal tumors, thoracoscopic spinal surgery,[28] spinal instrumentation, fusion enhancing technology, artificial discs, minimally invasive spinal surgery, and spinal biomechanics.

Dickman participated in several laboratory and clinical research projects and contributed to several medical inventions and product development projects. He published hundreds of scientific articles, book chapters, and abstracts, presented over 290 lectures and 86 posters at national and international medical meetings, and directed 57 hands-on practical surgical workshops.[11]

He had affiliations with Chandler Regional Medical Center, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, Phoenix Children's Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, and Medical Center.[12][13][14]

In 2015, Dickman retired from practicing medicine. He writes, produces diverse artwork, and aids humanitarian and philanthropic organizations.[29]

Dickman has been interviewed by several notable news channels and programs, including BBC, multiple Phoenix news programs, Wayne Brady Shows, Good Morning America, Montel Williams, and ESPN.

Art

Dickman's artwork incorporates advanced technology and includes painting, sculpture, collage, photography, digital art, reverse perspective, and kinetic techniques. He is strongly influenced by pop art, impressionism, cubism, and surrealism, and the significant works of artists including Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, MC Escher, Pablo Picasso, Yaacov Agam, Andy Warhol, Patrick Rubenstein, and Patrick Hughes.[30]

Dickman's Reverse Perspective art (also known as Reverspective art) and Opticokinetic art tests the viewer's perception of reality using 3D imagery, which transforms as the viewer's perspective changes in relationship to the art.

He has created custom artwork for Sir Elton John, Claire Holt, Jewel, and several charities.

In 2009, Dickman founded his company Curtis Dickman Fine Art, an Art Gallery in Paradise Valley, AZ.[31][32][33]

His art business has been designated as a Trusted Art Seller with The Art Storefronts Organization.[30]
