Selin Benjamin Bocio Richardson, known as Benjamin Bocio Richardson (born April 27, 1996), is a Dominican social entrepreneur, dentist,[1] and health activist,[2][3] known for promoting the accessibility of healthcare to low-income communities.

Early Years

Benjamin was born to Ana A. Richardson and Selin Bocio Casanova in the Distrito Nacional, Dominican Republic.

He graduated from high school with an Associate degree in Hospitality and a Doctor of Dentistry degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE), Santo Domingo, in 2017.[4][5]

Career

Humanitarian Work

Since childhood, Benjamin has worked against health inequity and supported underserved communities.[3]

After the outbreak of the Haiti earthquake in 2010, which caused a shortage of healthcare resources in the Haiti-Dominican Republic border area, 14 years old Benjamin and his father co-founded an NGO, Fumebo (Bocio Medical Foundation), where he currently serves as the Executive Director.[2][6][7][8][9] Through Fumebo, Benjamin implemented a model focused on reducing the social determinants of health through basic access to health resources. The foundation offers health services and resources to the patients of the poor communities of the Dominican Republic through medical operations encompassing different medical and dental specialties.[10]

Benjamin linked his humanitarian work with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by partnering with the Dr. Dario Contreras Trauma Hospital. They assist people living in low-income communities, including the Manuel de Jesús Bocio elementary school in Batista, El Cercado.[5][11][12]

Benjamin co-authored We Have a Dream, a best-selling book in Japan that collects stories of global activism and aims to teach children and adolescents about the world's most pressing problems and what they can do to unite. The book is directed by Taichi Ichikawa, co-founder of World Road, and funded by Project Hope.[2][13][14][15]

In 2022, the Dominican magazine Pandora named Benjamin the Dominican Robin Hood for mobilizing sustainable resources to help underserved communities.[16]

COVID-19

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Benjamin created "Vital Boxes," an initiative to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to healthcare workers on the frontline and other essential resources such as food, hand sanitizers, and face masks to families living in underserved communities. Multiple organizations, including the World Food Programme, supported the initiative. Benjamin won a fund for young leaders supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and One Young World.[17][18][19][20]

Awards and Recognition

2019

Benjamin represented the Dominican Republic at the One Young World Summit (2019) in London, the same charity that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry championed in Manchester with a keynote speech right before the death of Queen Elizabeth II. At the summit, he was one of the six delegate speakers who addressed 2,000 young leaders on poverty alleviation.[2][7][12][21]

Benjamin won National Solidarity Volunteering Award (Health) from the Vice Presidency of the Dominican Republic and the United Nations Development Programme. He received the title of Emerging Leader, from the Policy Center of The New South, under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI of Morocco.[3][12][17][22][18]

2021

Benjamin became the first Dominican to receive the Diana Award in honor of the legacy of Diana, Princess of Wales, for his humanitarian work.[3][17][23][24][25][26][27]

2022

National Youth award by the Presidency of the Dominican Republic and the Ministry of Youth.[28][29][30]
