Hablemos, escritoras is a literary podcast hosted by Adriana Pacheco, based in Austin, Texas. The podcast focused on female writers who write in Spanish or translate to and from Spanish. Launched in January 2018, the podcast now counts hundreds of episodes featuring in depth interviews, literary conversations, and book reviews. Together with its accompanying website, it is an authoritative source of information on the state of contemporary literature written by women in the Spanish-speaking world. The podcast is produced by Hablemos Escritoras, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas.

Development

Hablemos, escritoras is the evolution of Proyecto Escritoras Mexicanas Contemporáneas, a project started in 2015 to study the work of female Mexican writers living in Mexico or the diaspora and which, through surveys of different populations, made evident the poor visibility of these writers in the collective imagination of readers, doctoral students, teachers, and scholars.

Aiming to address this lack of visibility, and aware of the impact that podcasting was having in the United States, Hablemos, escritoras published its first episode in January 2018 featuring the writer Adriana González Mateos. The first episodes featured Mexican writers, and it was not long before the podcast and its accompanying website had audios and profiles for luminaries like Cristina Rivera Garza, McArthur Fellowship winner; Laura Esquivel, author of Like Water for Chocolate; Elena Poniatowska, Premio Cervantes winner; Rosa Beltrán, and many others.

The podcast grew in scope during its second year, adding writers from other countries, including many writing in Spanish from the United States, such as: Rosa Montero, Mariana Enríquez, Claudia Piñeiro, and more. Today it has more than 500 podcasts episodes. The website added sections to promote the work of other participants in the book industry, such as editors and translators. Book reviews came next, both in text and audio.

HablemosEscritoras.org

HablemosEscritoras.org complements the podcast, and together they constitute an entire reference ecosystem that includes not only the audio but additional information about writers, books and publishing houses. At the time of this writing, the website hosts the audio for more than 500 podcast episodes, a library with information about more than 3,000 books, and an encyclopedia with information for more than 1,400 female writers, blog posts about culture and literature, short book descriptions and book reviews all of this properly cross-linked for easy research and discovery.
