Megatronus, also known as the Fallen, is a villain from the Transformers franchise who appears in several media. He is most notable for inspiring the Decepticon leader Megatron, who named himself after Megatronus, and for being a member of the Thirteen Primes who in most media betrayed his comrades.

History

Generation 1

Dreamwave

The Fallen made his debut in The Transformers: The War Within, where it was revealed that he was created as the guardian of entropy, and that his fascination with decay and the dark arcane arts led him to side with Unicron against Primus. In the resulting battle he was drawn into a black hole and trapped outside reality, and discarded his old name out of contempt for his former allegiances.. Eventually returning, he recruited would be dark magicians Bludgeon, Mindwipe, and Bugly-the Chaos Trinity-to aid him in capturing various Transformers with "genetic potential" so that he could awaken Primus and alert Unicron to his location. However, despite his success in capturing Grimlock, Jetfire, Hot Spot, and Blitzwing, his plans were thwarted by a joint Autobot-Decepticon force led by Prowl and Shockwave, and Primus destroyed his former minion.

In this continuity, Megatronus was one of the Thirteen Primes who ruled Cybertron after the demise of the Guiding Hand and the departure of the Knights of Cybertron. Having formed an alliance with the Liege Maximo, Megatronus instigated a war between the tribes of Cybertronians led by himself and his brethren. However, one of their brethren, Alpha Trion, guided Nova Prime in bringing about an end to the conflict, and they were also aided by one of Megatronus' former lieutenants, Galvatron. Upon their defeat, the Primes departed Cybertron for worlds unknown.

Animated series

Megatronus is the arch-villain behind the events of Robots in Disguise season one, having caused the crash of the Alchemor in order to expedite his freedom. Having been defeated by the other Primes following his murder of Solus Prime and banished to an alternate dimension, he receives power from an unknown source that enables him to reach across dimensional boundaries and makes him even more formidable in combat. He soon persuades Steeljaw and his pack to aid him in his plans, calling himself "the First Decepticon", threatening them with his telekinetic powers but promising them rule of Earth. Eventually they complete a Spacebridge that enables him to arrive on Earth, despite Optimus Prime and Bumblebee's efforts to prevent it.

Megatronus then reveals that he blames both Cybertron and Earth for his previous defeat, and sets out to destroy the pair by fusing the AllSpark with the AntiSpark. Steeljaw quickly attacks him at rage in the betrayal, but is swiftly defeated, and Megatronus proves a tough opponent for the Autobots. However, Optimus succeeds in destroying his Spark Fuser, and Bumblebee's team then unlock the power of their Decepticon Hunter weapons. Megatronus is consumed by the power of these weapons, and no trace of him remains, but Bumblebee remained uncertain whether the Fallen was truly gone.

Books

In Transformers: The Covenant of Primus, Transformers: Exodus, and Transformers: Exiles, Megatronus' history as one of the Thirteen is expanded upon. Described as a dark warrior, and a reflection of Prima, he was initially a noble individual who struggled with the aspects of Unicron in his nature. He crafted a formidable arsenal but felt it lacking, and so approached Solus Prime-with whom he shared a romantic connection-to create a weapon of awesome power: the Requiem Blaster. Solus reluctantly agreed, and the rest of the Thirteen voted to retain the weapon and employ it despite its dangerous power. The Thirteen eventually succeeded in defeating Unicron, but soon began to drift apart.

Megatronus was soon drawn into an alliance with Quintus Prime and Liege Maximo, the latter manipulating him for his own ends and sending him to retrieve a set of armor crafted by Solus. When his love refused to hand it over, Megatronus-long tormented by the others fear of him and his own volatile nature-turned his weapons upon her, extinguishing her Spark. This kicked off the War of the Primes, after which Megatronus departed from Cybertron and discarded his name and dubbed himself "the Fallen." The Covenant and the novels differ on Megatronus' nature following this conflict: The Covenant describes him as being remorseful, while the novels align with the Robots in Disguise depiction in that he harbors a hatred of his fellow Primes.
