    History

At Ben & Lael, Inc., Ben Caldwell crafts unique, functional metalworks aimed at adding beauty to homes and lives. Trained by Terry Tally, Caldwell uses copper, silver, and enamel to create timeless art pieces, focusing on quality, craftsmanship, and longevity. Inspired by vintage silver and nature, his works are truly one-of-a-kind, perfect for those seeking custom, functional art

Education & Training:

Ben& Lael classically trained painter and sculptor, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tufts University in 1991. Ben then went on to receive further training at The Studio School of New York, Harvard University and The Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Before finding his passion for metalwork, he made everything from custom guitars to West African drums; but, as an artist, he wasn’t making much of a living until his father was approached by nationally known metal worker, Terry Talley.

Terry was a metal artist of the old school. He was dying of lymphoma when he approached his father and asked if he would be interested in training under him. He knew that he was an artist, and he wanted to pass the almost entirely abandoned craft on to the next generation. Honored, he quit his job in 1999 to train with Terry full-time.

Since he had classical background and an incredible teacher, he caught on rather quickly, and even began to invent, design and build a lot of his own tools. With the help of his phenomenal teacher, his supportive parents and his amazing wife (Lael), he started Ben & Lael Inc., and began creating and selling custom, one-of-a-kind copper, silver and enamel art. Since then, he has received the Tennessee Artists’ Guild’s “Emerging Artist of the Year” award, and he has also had work commissioned as a wedding gift for Amy Grant and Vince Gill.
