Benefits:

  • HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitor
  • α-lipoic acid induces apoptosis in human colon cancer cells
  • Activates AMPK
  • Reduces insulin resistance
  • Modulates Nrf2 transcription.
  • Suppresses renal oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • Enhances sirtuin 1 deacetylase activity
  • increases adipose triacylglycerol lipase expression
  • decreases fatty acid synthase abundance
  • Prevents renal tubular cell apoptosis, fibrosis, and diabetic nephropathy
  • Adults can take up to 2,400 mg without harmful side effects
  • Improves Intestinal Dysmotility (does it cause diarrhea?)
  • Colitis
  • Streptococcus

Side effects:

  • Hepatotoxic
  • Flatulence

Diabetic nephropathy

In addition to activating AMPK and reducing insulin resistance, alpha lipoic acid modulates Nrf2 transcription, suppresses renal oxidative stress, reduces inflammation, enhances sirtuin 1 deacetylase activity, increases adipose triacylglycerol lipase expression, and decreases fatty acid synthase abundance. It also prevents renal tubular cell apoptosis, fibrosis, and diabetic nephropathy.
