Weirdwolf is a fictional character from the Transformers series introduced in 1987. He is a member of the Decepticon Headmasters. A second Weirdwolf toy was released as an exclusive at the Botcon Transformers convention. More recent versions have been called Wolfwire.

Transformers: Generation 1

The character is partnered with the character Monzo, who in the US continuity was an ex-hyperwrestler turned night club owner by trade. Weirdwolf converts from robot to wolf and back, while Monzo converts from human-like figure into the robot's head (hence the term Headmaster). The toy was released in 1987.[1]

According to Weirdwolf's Tech spec, he is a tracker and has a few screws loose in his head. He speaks to himself in a "singsong backward way" and can leap .8 miles. Weirdwolf is armed with a photon pistol and thermal sword. [2]

Marvel Comics

Weirdwolf originally appeared in the four issue The Transformers: Headmasters comic, where he was binary bonded to his Headmaster partner Monzo.

One of his most prominent actions during this period was to act as bait for a trap alongside the other Decepticon Headmasters. The plan worked, luring the Autobot Headmasters to the Fortress of Despair, where the Decepticons captured Highbrow, planning to use him to perfect their own Headmaster process. The plan failed when Highbrow forced Scorponok to flee. (Transformers U.K. 130-131)

Weirdwolf participated in many battles against the Autobots before coming to Earth as part of Scorponok's group.

Weirdwolf would appear again in issue #49, "The Underbase Saga Part 3, Cold War!" In this story he was a member of the Decepticon forces under Scorponok's command. They were tricked into fighting the Decepticon forces under Ratbat's command by Starscream, who used the battle to steal Scorponok's ship and get to the Underbase.

Issue #248 of the Marvel UK Transformers comic featured a story called "Fallen Star", where Starscream began to doubt himself, despite being of the most powerful Transformers. Soundwave, Mindwipe and Weirdwolf feared Starscream would attack, but Starscream thought they were laughing at him behind his back. Leaving Starscream came across the Autobots Chainclaw, Cloudburst and Getaway, who were assigned by Optimus Prime to spy on him. Starscream soundly defeated all three Autobots and regained his self confidence.

He later fought against Unicron.

Weirdwolf would appear among the troops of Bludgeon attacking the planet Klo in issue #80, "The End of the Road!" After Bludgeon's ambush wiped out most of the Autobots, Weirdwolf was used to track down survivors along with Fangry, locating Grimlock's group. Although they were winning against the Autobots, the arrival of Optimus Prime and The Last Autobot turned the tide and the Decepticons retreated.

He appeared later in the Transformers: Generation 2 comic during the attack on Earth, noting it was "feeding time" as he transformed to wolf mode. It is unclear whether he survived the subsequent battles against Jhiaxus' forces and the Swarm.

Animated series

Weirdwolf only appeared in The Transformers TV series in the 3-part episode The Rebirth, never spoke, however his partner Monzo did have a couple lines. Weirdwolf also appeared in the U.S. Marvel Comics's "Headmasters", a sub-series of the main Transformers comic also from Marvel.

In Japan, Weirdwolf was a central character in the 35-episode series "Transformers: Headmasters". Weirdwolf is joined in the Decepticon Headmasters by fellow comrades Mindwipe, Skullcruncher, Scorponok (Decepticon Headmaster leader), Apeface and Snapdragon.[3]

He last appeared in episode #35 "The Final Showdown on Earth Part 2."

Books

Weirdwolf appeared in the 1988 Ladybird Books story Autobots Strike Oil by John Grant. [4]

Dreamwave Productions

Weirdwolf and Monzo did not apprear in the comic fiction from Dreamwave Productions but they did receive a biography page in their Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye comic.

Fun Publications

In the 2007 "Games of Deception" comic by Fun Publications, Weirdwolf appeared among the Decepticons under the command of Bug Bite who were sent to Earth by Bludgeon. In this story he is no longer be a Headmaster. Speaking in the singsong way described in his tech spec (which annoyed Thundercracker no end) Weirdwolf seemed loyal to Bug Bite. In the final battle against Megatron's troops, Weirdwolf proclaimed he was too nimble for the Decepticon leader to hit - until being shot by Megatron's fusion cannon shot in mid-rhyme.

It was revealed in "Withered Hope" that Weirdwolf had survived and been taken for repairs by Dreadwind.[5]

Weirdwolf appears in the 2012 BotCon Invasion lithograph by Casey Coller and Josh Perez.[6]
