History

WhatsOn was founded by Sam Alim in 1994, as a Student guide whilst a student union president at Birmingham, he also studied at University of London. WhatsOn quickly established itself as a progressive voice for students & youth, and many famous faces started their career at WhatsOn as activist, including Adrian Goldberg - BBC presenter, Bob MaCabe - BBC critic, Catherine O’Flinn - Costa prize winner, Chris Burke - Assistant Editor of Loaded, Nick Compton - Assistant Editor of FHM, Dr Robert Beckford - Channel 4 presenter, Dr Rupa Haq MP, and many more celebs. Sam Alim turned this in to a successful monthly with progressive editorial structure and marketing strategy, which is still used today. Still to this day activist, students & upcoming writers are the main contributors and provide listings, reports & reviews. Whilst Setsu Adachi from Japan designed its progressive logo and strong visual identity & the Web site. The monthly with ground breaking covers, agenda setting reports became an essential part of progressive culture and a collectors item. WhatsOn also founded Cafe One, the UK’s first Fair Trade cafe, until 2008. Located at Broad St, Birmingham, the building was eventually boarded up by Mars, who owned the building, while staff from the cafe and magazine were still working inside, which was reported extensively through mass media & TV coverage. Following the closure of Cafe One, the media section relocated to Birmingham city centre.
