The United States Merchant Marine Academy is one of the five United States service academies.[1][2] The Academy falls under the authority of the United States Secretary of Transportation. Students are known as midshipmen, and pay no tuition, with the expectation they will serve five years in the United States Naval Reserve after graduation, if they don't pursue an active military career. Graduates leave with a Bachelor of Science degree, and a Coast Guard license.

The campus is located in Kings Point, New York, on Long Island, within view of downtown New York City.[1] In the late 20th and early 21st centuries critics have challenged the Academies relevance and curriculum.
