UFC 149: Aldo vs. Koch is an upcoming mixed martial arts event held by Ultimate Fighting Championship. It is expected to take place on July 21, 2012 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.[1]

Background

Billed as a "Major Announcement" by UFC President Dana White, the Ultimate Fighting Championship's return to Canada was announced at a news conference on March 21, 2012. [2] The event will be the first that the UFC has held in Alberta.[3][4]

On April 24, due to a conflict with the UN Conference and the troubles of securing a venue for UFC 147, the UFC Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, which was originally scheduled to main event the card, was moved to UFC 148 to serve as the new main event.[5] Plans were then being made for Jose Aldo, who at the time was scheduled to defend his title at this event against an undetermined opponent, to headline UFC 147.[6] However it was reported on April 28, 2012, that Aldo would remain on this card and defend his title against Erik Koch.[7] The title fight was confirmed by the UFC on May 7, 2012.[8][9]

The bout between Michael Bisping and Tim Boetsch, originally scheduled for UFC 148, was moved to this event to bolster that card.[10]

Yoshihiro Akiyama was expected to face Thiago Alves at the event. However, Akiyama was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by Siyar Bahadurzada.[11][12] Alves was also injured and forced out of the bout with Bahadurzada, a replacement search is underway.[13]

Thiago Silva was expected to face Maurício Rua at the event. However, Silva was forced out of the bout with an injury and is expected to be replaced byGlover Teixeira.[14]
