The Sea of Azov is a large bay in the northeast corner of the Black Sea. The large Crimean Peninsula protudes from the north shore of the Black Sea, and only a short distance separates its easternmost portion from the east shore of the Black Sea.

Following the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea Russia spent several billion dollars bridging the gap between Crimea and the rest of Russia. The bridge has three parallel sections: one carries a pair of rail lines, while the other two are multi-lane highways, one for each direction.
