Targetmasters

Recoil is a fictional character in the Transformers series. He is an Autobot allied Nebulan Targetmaster, and partner to the Autobot Kup.

Transformers: Generation 1

Recoil transforms into a replica of an antique style musket laser. While Kup love's the weapon's old-time-feel, in actuality, he is capable of shooting 100 pulse per second bursts of metal corrosive hydrochloric acid, with a 5 mile range.

The Dreamwave biography for Recoil says he is a retired sports star past his prime who wants to make one last go with the Autobots.

In the Marvel Comics Transformers stories Nebulans are depicted as human-looking aliens, while in the animated series they are green-skinned aliens. In the Ladybird Books stories the Nebulans are human-sized robots.

Animated series

Recoil in The Transformers

Recoil first appeared in the Transformers episode "The Rebirth, Part 1" as a sharpshooter among the rebel Nebulan group lead by Gort. In part 2 the Autobots copy Targetmaster technology from the Decepticons and Recoil is converted into the gun used by Kup. In part 3 the Autobots and their Nebulans travel to Cybertron for the final showdown with the Decepticons. He then returns to Nebulos to rid the planet of the Hive's machines.

Books

Recoil is featured in the Ladybird Transformers book Autobots Strike Oil. During an oil shortage Recoil tells Kup and Hot Rod of the legends of an oil lake in the mountains that had disappeared in an earthquake. In the book Recoil is colored red instead of black.[1]

Comics

Blackthorne Publishing

Recoil appeared in the Blackthorne Publishing The Transformers in 3D issue #3 as Kup's sidearm. Kup uses Recoil against Cyclonus and the Terrorcons.[2]

Dreamwave Productions

Manga

Recoil appears as Kup's gun in the Generations 2011 issue #2 "The Fierce Fighting on Planet Nebulos" where he is part of a team lead by Stepper to obtain a cure for nano-virus which is effecting some Autobots. When the Autobots arrive on Nebulos they are attacked by a group of Decepticons lead by Straxus. The Autobots are able to obtain the cure and bring it back to Earth, where Ricochet's team is commended by Optimus Prime.[3]

Marvel Comics

The Autobot Targetmaster from Headmasters 4

Recoil first appeared in issue #4 of the Marvel Comics Headmasters comic in a story called "Brothers in Armor!!" where he volunteered to be binary bonded to Kup as his Targetmaster partner. The Autobots then fled Nebulos for Earth in an attempt to lure away the Decepticons.[4]

Although Recoil is not depicted, in issue 38 of The Transformers the Autobots and Decepticons from Nebulos arrive on Earth.

In issue 39 Spike Witwicky introduces Fortress Maximus and the Autobot Targetmasters to his father Sparkplug.

In issue 71 the Autobots surrendered to the Decepticons, and Kup gives up his partner Recoil.
