Paper abortion, also known as statutory abort[1][2], is a term that refers to the proposed ability of the father of a child to opt out of any rights, privileges, and responsibilities toward the child, including financial support[3], without having an effect on women's choice of giving birth or not. By this means, men would be able to deny fatherhood.[2][4][5]

Debate and Public Attention

Pro Arguments

It will give men and women as equal opportunities as possible.[6] Furthermore, it would give men rights, when they are tricked into parenthood[6], raped[7][8][9] or their semen get stolen[10]. And no contraceptive is 100% reliable[11][3]. It will not only emancipate men but would also give women more freedom. It will decrease the abortion rate. Women who want to become mothers but don't want to use sperm donors will have a legal way to become pregnant, without having a man at her side.[9]

Contra Arguments

The denial of parenthood meats same contra arguments[12][13] as common abortion did[14]: use birth control or don't have sex at all.[15][16]

Patriarchal View

Anne Sophia Hermansen indicates a sexist statement behind the denial of Paper Abortion. Men are seen as full responsible of own action, having sex without birth control to the left and the right, without wanting to take responsibility of own action. Women are viewed as victims, not responsible of own actions at all.[6]

Feminism

Feminists are very divided on this. Some feminists want equal rights and promote this idea. Other feminists deny it.[6]

Quote of two contra feminists from Denmark[12]:

Never have men been so bitchlike|Politiken

Quote of a feminist for Paper Abortion[3]:

Consent to sex does not and has not for a very long time, been the same as consent to becoming a parent. The invention of birth control has seen to that. Plenty of people had sex during a time where they would not have wanted to get pregnant including high school, college, casual hook-ups, FWB relationships, on the third date, when they just got married, etc etc and for some reason can see this happen in their own lives but don't think that extends to men. -- Lauren Campbell

By Country

There is no paper abortion in any country yet. But there is a huge debate in many countries. Especially Scandinavia is talking about this option.

Denmark

The statutory abort was first introduced in Denmark in 2000 by the socioeconomic Henrik Platz. He sees the subject from an egalitarian perspective, where women and men should be equal to law. According to a Gallup poll from 2014, 7 of 10 Danes want to legalize a paper abortion.[2]
