In the Prime story Optimus Maximus is a gigantic transforming Autobot battle station kept in their motor pool.

Fictional biography

Optimus Maximus is the ultimate weapon in the Autobot arsenal - a rolling battle station so powerful that some commanders hesitate to deploy it. It carries enough firepower to break the back of even the mightiest Decepticon army. Even Megatron has learned to fear Optimus Maximus!

Animated series

Optimus Maximus never appeared in the Prime animated series. His sole animated appearance was in the commercial for his toy. Ratchet walked Bumblebee through the Autobots' motor pool, dismissing a humvee and a tank in favour of the biggest, baddest walking arsenal they had - Optimus Maximus! Manning the titan's shoulder turrets, the two Autobots rode Maximus into battle against an army of Vehicons, deploying Bulkhead from one of his arm compartments and blowing up an Energon Driller with his mighty weapons.

Introduced in 2015, Optimus Maximus is the combined form of Ironhide, Mirage, Optimus Prime, Prowl, and Sunstreaker. Sometimes Rodimus is also involved.

Optimus Maximus should not be confused with Ultra Prime, a combiner made by Optimus Prime combining with Alpha Bravo, Drag Strip, Firefly and Skydive.

Fictional biography

The Autobot combiner is the last line of defense in the Combiner Wars. If he falls, Cybertron may fall with him.

Comics

IDW Publishing

Note: Because the art and writing for the first IDW Publishing of Optimus Maximus had to be done before the toy was finalized, his appearance varies greatly from the toy. He is sometimes depicted as having a red Optimus Prime, sometimes a white "Battle Core" Optimus, his limbs are vaguely defined, and don't resemble their toys, and Rodimus is left out of the story entirely.

After Prowl's first two attempts at stopping Starscream ended in his arrest, he fell back on his contingency plan: roping Rattrap into stealing the Enigma of Combination and delivering it to his cell—just as Ironhide, Mirage, and Sunstreaker arrived to meet with Optimus Prime. Although Optimus tried to stop Rattrap, he activated the Enigma. The five Autobots were exposed to its energy, merging them into a new, combined form. With Prowl in control, the new combiner headed through the unstable space bridge portal, vowing to end the conflict once and for all.

Devastator was not impressed with Prowl's "upgrade", and made his displeasure clear by clobbering him. Within, the other Autobots struggled against Prowl's analytical personality, weakening the combination and causing them to collapse. Superion and Defensor were forced to help the struggling gestalt against Devastator and Menasor's onslaught. Within the combiner's psyche, Optimus and Prowl finally reached a grudging understanding. As the brawling combiners bounced from world to world, the five separate minds united... causing the reinvigorated combiner to declare himself Optimus Maximus! The three combiners managed to surround Devastator as they reappeared at Cybertron and tore him apart, reducing him to his components. With both combiners defeated, Optimus Maximus willingly separated himself so that Prowl could be arrested. Since Prowl was now in custody, a saddened Superion mused that Optimus Maximus might never form again
