History & Operations

Native Vanilla was founded in 2018 by entrepreneur and fintech expert Dan Edmiston. In 1981, when Edmiston was still a child, his family had moved to a village in Papua New Guinea. He revisited the village in 2014 to meet his childhood friends and witnessed the obstacles faced by farmers who were cultivating vanilla pods. In 2017, Edmiston sold his fintech company and decided to start Native Vanilla.[2]

Native Vanilla sources its vanilla beans from villages in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. It partners with local farmers to establish cooperatives that provide training and resources to the vanilla growers. It helps farmers achieve better quality and consistency of vanilla beans. As of 2019, Native Vanilla supports around 2000 vanilla growers in various East Sepik Villages and has commenced working with farmers in the Western Province.
