Marla Bennett was an American student, studying in Israel, who was killed by a bomb, in Jerusalem, on July 31, 2002.[1]

Bennett already had a degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and was studying at Hebrew University's Rothberg International School and at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies.[2]

The bombing

The bomb exploded in a cafeteria at Hebrew University, killing Bennett and eight other individuals, and wounding 85.[3] The bomber, who was captured in 2002, was Mohammad Odeh, who expressed remorse, after his capture.[4]

Compensation

Bennett's parents sued for compensation from the government of Iran, based on the premise that Iran sponsored Hamas -- the group that took responsibility for the attack.[1] Her parents were awarded over $12 million USD, in 2007, but the United States Federal government declined to allow a lien on the Iranian embassy, in order to honor the principle of diplomatic immunity. In 2011 they initiated a new suit, attempting to acquire payment through two American companies they believed were holding Iranian assets -- Franklin Templeton Fiduciary Trust and Visa incorporated.
