Kellie Chauvin
Born Cambodia
Nationality USA
Occupation medical technician, realtor
Known for (1) Mrs Minnesota, 2018; (2) Divorced her husband who murdered a black man

Kellie Chauvin is an American radiology technician and former Mrs Minnesota beauty pageant.[1]

She arrived in the USA as a refugee from South-east Asia, from the Hmong ethnic group. When she was chosen as a beauty queen, at 42, she described feeling unattractive, as a teenager.

She described an abusive early marriage. Her family pressured her to marry another Hmong refugee when she was just 17 years old. She has two adult children from this marraige. Despite giving birth to two children Kellie was able to complete a college degree, and become a radiology technician. Her first husband, on the other hand, did not cope well with America, and he died not long after their marriage ended.

It was while working in a hospital emergency room, in 2010, that she met her second husband, Police officer Derek Chauvin, when he brought in a suspect, for a medical treatment. She describes being impressed by his kindness, and they soon married.

Kellie switched careers, from radiology, to real estate.

She entered the Mrs USA pageant system, and gave multiple interviews after being chosen as 2018's Mrs Minnesota. In those interviews she described her second husband, Derek, as a sweet and loving man.

On May 25, 2020, a concerned bystander recorded an 8 minute and 46 second video that seemed to show her husband, supported by three more junior officers, methodically choking George Floyd, a suspect in a minor crime.

She describes her first husband being abusive. And he died not long after their separation. Her 2010 marraige to police officer Derek Chauvin was her second.

Journalists, who looked into her background, found she wrote a bad check, in Wisconsin, in 2005, while still married to her first husband, Kujay Xiong.[2]

In late May, 2020, her husband was captured, on a bystander's cell phone's video, methodically killing an unarmed suspect by holding his knee on the suspect's neck. The video went viral, triggering outrage and protest, around the world.

Within days of the incident false information had been circulated about her, and she is reported to have received death threats, as a consequence.[3] Kellie filed for divorce three days after the incident. She did not request spousal support, even though she was currently out of work.

According to Ms Chauvin's friends, she is known for providing help to struggling small business operated by members of the Hmong community, for volunteering to serve as a translator, for Hmong people, and for providing a refuge for Hmong women fleeing the kind of domestic abuse she faced in her first marriage.[4]

The judge presiding over the couple's divorce rejected the first proposed settlement agreement, which awarded a very high share of the marital assets to Kellie Chauvin, because it gave the appearance the couple were colluding to put their shared marital assets beyond the reach of Floyd's family, if they were to sue Derek Chauvin in civil court.[3][5][6][7][8]

On April 6, 2021, Inside Edition acquired a copy of the divorce settlement, which said Kellie's share of the marital assets was $704,000.[9][10] Her ex-husband's share was $421,000.

On June 3rd, 2021, at a sentencing hearing, Derek Chauvin claimed he merited a very light sentence.[11] Among the arguments he offered were that he still enjoyed the support of his ex-wife and her family.

Reporters, attending to Derek Chauvin's wife supported him, speculated as to whether she would attend his June 25th, 2021 sentencing.[12]

On November 5, 2021, Kellie and Derek both pleaded not guilty to charges of tax evasion.[13] The charges against them alleged they had underreported over $400,000 of their income.[14][15] Derek Chauvin entered his not guilty plea via a videolink.[16] Kellie pleaded not guilty in a separate hearing, that followed her ex-husbands.[16]

The trial date for the tax evasion charges against her and her husband was scheduled for September 21, 2022.[17]

In February 2023 Chauvin agreed to be interviewed by the UK newspaper The Daily Mail.[18] According to The New York Post it was her first interview since her ex-husband was charged with killing George Floyd. The New York Post quotes Chauvin saying Derek's trial was "definitely" unfair, and that he deserves a new trial. In the interview she declined to answer the question as to whether Derek was a racist. She said she had not maintained contact with him, in prison. She also said he had ruined her life, and that she had not been able to work as a realtor, due to threats to her safety.

The Daily Mail reported she had changed her name, and did not publish that new name, or her current town.[18]

Chauvin pled guilty to tax evasion on February 24, 2023.[19] Her plea agreement was said to guarantee her no prison time, require paying restitution, community service and three years of probation. Chauvin received her sentence on her tax evasion charges on May 12, 2023.[20] She had to serve 20 days in jail and pay $38,000 in restitution.
