Early Life and Education

Phillips was born and raised in Colchester, Essex and grew up in a farming family, his father managing E.W. King & Co and his Grandfather Managing Director. He was the 5th generation of his family to have worked on the farm. His mother is a professional florist, having trained at Constance Spry in London. His sister managed the chocolate department at Fortnum & Mason, Piccadilly and became a PA at St Pauls Cathedral. His uncles were highly academic, one with a Physics Ph.D and a career in the nuclear sector, and the youngest an ArchPriest of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR).[2]

Phillips has a naval heritage, his great grandfather being ship wrecked on HMS Otranto in World War 1, and latterly serving on the private yacht of Lord Guinness the Fantome II, renamed the Belem, with both grandfather’s serving in the Mediterranean and Middle East Theatre of operations in World war Two.

Phillips attended the Colchester Boy’s High School, the same school as his father and God father. He went on to the Colchester Sixth Form College, the Colchester Institute, and studied for a B.A Hons. at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge in 1997. He spent his spare time in his 20’s and 30’s working with his father on the farm and buying and restoring World War Two military vehicles and farm machinery. His father was naturally gifted in this field, having co-founded the Essex Locomotive Society who rescued and restored back to steam, three locomotives to mainline standard.[3]

Phillips is a talented portrait artist specialising in oil on canvas with a planned gallery exhibition commencing on the Riviera. His deputy headmaster once said when awarding Phillips the Ashdown art trophy in 1990 that James Phillips is an outstanding artist and colourist,’ while his art teacher prophesised that one day 'you will become a great artist'
