Churchill, Manitoba, is the most southerly of these ports, but, technically, Hudson's Bay is part of the Arctic Ocean. It it the most northerly port that is attached to the North American railroad grid.
Hudsons Bay is only free of ice for less than half the year. But it is free in the fall, so Churchill can be used to ship grain. Cargo transported by sea requires a third as much fuel as cargo transported by rail.
I used an tool that was formerly available online to make this map. This online tool used http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/ -- presenting a form based front end to the database, and software that were considered free. Thus images prepared with it were free. I chose to put all the images I prepared in the public domain.
