The Canadian Coast Guard is building ten new modified Severn class motor lifeboats. The vessels are intended to replace the Coast Guard's ten Canadian Arun class motor lifeboats, which averaged almost twenty years of service.

Canadian nautical architectural firm Robert Allan Ltd. was responsible for the modifications to the original Severn design, making the vessels more suited to extreme weather conditions found off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.[1] Capable of Template:Convert/knots, the new vessels will be almost twice as fast as the earlier Arun class vessels.[2]

In July 2013 the Stephen Harper administration commissioned a design for replacements for CCG's Arun class vessels from Canadian nautical design firm, Robert Allan Ltd..[2] The Canadian design was a modification from the RNLI's Severn class lifeboats.[3]

In November 2014 the Harper government confirmed plans to replace its Arun class vessels with This design started from the design for the RNLI Severn class vessels, however, they will be larger, and more powerful, because Canada's east coast has more demanding wearther conditions than the UK's coast. The vessels' hulls will be aluminum, not fiberglass. They are designed to operate in wind conditions up to Beaufort Force 12 and waves of up to 12 metres.

In late 2014 the Stephen Harper administration announced plans to replace the ten Arun class vessels with ten vessels designed by the
