The Algolake is a lake freighter and bulk carrier, equipped with boom system making her capable of self-loading and unloading. She was built in Collingwood, Ontario in 1976, and commissioned in 1977. She was Algoma Central's first lake freighter built with a single superstructure right aft, combining the ship's bridge, crew accommodation and engine room. Traditionally lake freighters had two superstructures, right forward and right aft, with the bridge and some or all of the crew accommodation in the forward superstructure.

The Algolake has two diesel engines powering a single variable pitch propeller in a Kort nozzle. She is capable of 12 knots.
