The USCGC Jacob L. A. Poroo (WPC-1125) is the 25th Sentinel class cutter built for the United States Coast Guard. When she was commissioned in late 2017 she was the first Sentinel class cutter to be homeported in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Like her sister sips the Jacob Poroo's duties will including search and rescue, port security, and intercepting smugglers attempting to transport undocumented refugees, drugs, guns, or other contraband. Her crew of 24 are armed with a 25 mm remote controlled, gyrostabilized autocannon, and four fifty caliber M2 Browning machine guns. Her high-speed boat can be launched or retrieved from her stern launching ramp, without requiring the vessel to first come to a halt.

Namesake

In 2010, Charles "Skip" W. Bowen, who was then the Coast Guard's most senior non-commissioned officer, proposed that all 58 cutters in the Sentinel class should be named after enlisted sailors in the Coast Guard, or one of its precursor services, who were recognized for their heroism.[1][2][3] Jacob Poroo was a courageous hospital corpsman, who re-entered a burning building at a Coast Guard based in Alaska, when he believed other sailors were trapped inside. .[4] She was built in Lockport, Louisiana, at the Bollinger shipyards, and delivered to the Coast Guard on September 5, 2017. After completing her sea trials, the cutter will be commissioned in November 2017.
