Sixto David Fernandez is the owner of an auto repair shop, in the [[Dominican Republic], and a friend of baseball player David Ortiz.[1][2] On June 19, 2019, Dominican Republic investigators asserted they suspected that the shooter who wounded Ortiz really intended to shoot Fernandez.

Fernandez was a regular at the Dial Bar and Lounge, in Santo Domingo, where the shooting occurred, and Ortiz was dressed similarly to Fernandez.[2] A third friend, Jhoel Lopez, was injured by a bullet after it transitted Ortiz's body.[1] Fernandez was unhurt.

Victor Hugo Gómez Vasquez of the Gulf Cartel is suspected of being the mastermind of the shooting.[3] Officials said they suspected he had offered the shooters $8,000 for shooting Fernandez. The New York Post reported that authorities speculate that Gomez may have suspected Fernandez had been informing on him, to the American Drug Enforcement Agency.[1]

Fernandez has denied any involvement in, or knowledge of, the drug trade.[1]

The alleged triggerman, Rolfi Ferreira Cruz, and ten other suspects, were arrested.[1] Gomez, and two other men suspected in playing a role in the hit, Luis Alfredo Rivas Clase, Alberto Miguel Rodriguez Mota, remain at large.
