Kiyosaki is of Japanese descent from his father's side and Irish descent from his mother's side. In addition to his older sister Emi, Kiyosaki has two younger brothers, Takeshi and Henry. When he was nine years old, his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he attended Arcadia High School until he dropped out when he was 17. He later obtained a GED certificate.

In 1968, after serving in the United States Marine Corps and being honorably discharged, Kiyosaki started his own company called The Pacific Institute with Mike Merrill. The Pacific Institute was a privately held educational company specializing in seminars and training programs on business and financial education issues. Kiyosaki eventually sold the company in 1994.

Career

In 1977, Kiyosaki began buying real estate. In 1985 he founded an international multi-level marketing company called Cashflow Technologies, Inc. The Rich Dad Company is a holding company that owns multiple businesses focused on financial education, including training, conferences, board games, mobile apps, and real estate investments. The company also operates under brands such as "Rich Woman," "SpeedWealth," "Rich Kid Smart Kid," and "Elite Expat". The name "Rich Dad" comes from the story Kiyosaki often tells about learning about money from his friend's father, who he simply refers to as "Rich Dad".
