Pledging Love on the Great River is the eleventh episode of the animated television series Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos, which was broadcast on September 11th, 1986 in Japan.[1]

Plot

The cities of Konan (left) and Dakota (right) in Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos episode 11, "Pledging Love on the Great River"

The group arrives at the Dragon River where the Dakota settlement - Rod's birthplace - is located and decide to rest there for a while. Rod himself has slept in and stays behind while the rest go into town. On arrival, Rom and Jet think the townspeople resent their presence. Reina is less suspicious, especially after she's given a flower by a young boy. He then forces a collar on her and the group are attacked by the residents. Jim is shot with an arrow and the travelers surrender, hoping when Rod arrives he will sort the misunderstanding. Rod himself has been delayed further after finding a girl caught in a trap; on freeing her he finds she is called Melodia and is from neighboring Konan, located on the other side of the river. The two towns are at war since a flood buried their Romtron energy source. The Dakota leader Lord Bison blamed Konan for the death of his son in the catastrophe, while the Konan leader Dart - Melodia's father - blamed the people of Dakota for the death of his wife. Rod realizes Rom and the others will be in trouble and sets off to help after Melodia begs him to end the conflict. Bison believes Rom and the others are spies for Konan begins to interrogate them. Meanwhile, Rod finds Bison is employing Gandora - led by Casmodon - to help excavate the Romtron, and Dart is doing the same.

Casmodon holds Mixer Robo at his mercy in Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos episode 11, "Pledging Love On the Great River"

Rod tries to find his companions, but is caught by Bison's son Combat Buggy - an old childhood friend. With his help Rod saves Rom's group from death and leads them to the quary where the Gandora soon show their true colors. Combat Buggy tries to rescue Bison from Casmodon, helped by Rom, while Jet and Rod confront the Gandora in Konan. This is seen by Dart and Melodia who join in the fight. Rom is knocked off a cliff battling the Gandora captain but summons Blade Dragon to save himself. Outclassed by Casmodon, he then has to call up Vikung-Fu and makes short work of the Casmodon. Combat Buggy leads the Dakota miners against the rest of the Gandora troops in Konan and the allied towns soon drive them off together. Rod doesn't get the girl, however - Combat Buggy and Melodia have been secretly in love throughout the conflict, cementing the towns' new alliance. Jet tries to console Drill and nearly gets another thumping for his trouble.

Notes

  • Firsts: This is the first appearance of Casmodon, Combat Buggy, Dump Robo, Harrier Robo, Helitranser, Mixer Robo, and Trailer Robo, who all appear in later episodes.
  • Offroad Robo was last seen in episode 7 leaving the Leo Clan encampment.
  • Battle Robo and Supercar Robo were last seen in episode 10 working for Bug Newman.
  • Battleflex appears parked behind the heroes at the beginning of the episode, but is not seen again.
  • Dakota is a city on southern shore of the Dragon River and populated by Battle Clan members (and some Jet Clan). It is the home town of Rod Drill, and presumably his childhood friend Trim Sponsor. The town is run by Lord Bison.
  • Konan is a city on the northern shore of the Dragon River and populated by Chronos Clan members. The town is run by Dart.
  • Casmodon is the first Machine Robo Devil Invader toy based character to appear in the series. He is based on the toy which was released as the female Monster GoBot Vamp.
  • Rom Stol's lecture this week is about "friendship". Casmodon doesn't deserve to know Rom's name.
  • Death toll: Casmodon kills a man in a bar in Dakota. Rom kills a Devil Soldier with his Southern Cross attack. Rod Drill and Blue Jet take out 9 Devil Soldiers in Konan. Rom kills another Devil soldier with a kick, then two more with his Reverse Body Punch. Casmodon is killed by Vikung-Fu's Thunder Claw.
  • The French dub of this episode was called "Promesse D'amour et de Paix", which means "Promise of Love and Peace".
  • In some English subtitles the name of this episode is "Swear To Love On the Broad Seas" and "Swear To Love By the Broad Rivers".
