Early Life

Phillip was born and raised in Fort Washington, Maryland, United States[1]. His father is a retired auto mechanic, and his mother is a retired budget analyst. Phillip started playing the piano at the age of 18 months. He began playing in church at the age of nine and began directing choirs at 12. He graduated from Bowie State University, earning a B.S. Degree in Music Education with a minor in Voice.

Professional Life

Phillip Carter is an experienced and anointed musician, producer, choir director, gospel recording artist, composer, conference founder, and mentor. He has attained national and international fame and success through his many accomplishments in the music and education realm.

Phillip and his group, SOV (Sounds of Victory), won a Stellar Award for the 2010 Fan Favorite Choir of the Year. He is the producer of the 2010 Stellar Award winner for Children's Performance of the Year, Dr. Emory Andrews and the Oxon Hill High School Gospel Choir's "Amazing." In addition, he is the producer of Maranatha’s #1 gospel music projects Top #15 Gospel Praise Hits and #25 Gospel Praise Songs (2015).

Phillip has performed on stage with some of the world’s most renowned Gospel artists including Dorinda Clark-Cole, Deitrick Haddon, the late Edwin Hawkins, Lady Tramaine Hawkins, the late Walter Hawkins, David and Tamela Mann, Richard Smallwood, Tye Tribbett, the late Albertina Walker, and the late Pastor Timothy Wright.

Phillip exhibits his care for others in the independent musician and songwriter community and his community at large with the establishment of the Independent Gospel Artists Alliance, Bring Back the Choir New Music Forum, and the DMV Musicians and Singers Fellowship. Phillip has made a positive impact on young people's lives as a former teacher and mentor at public schools in Washington, D.C., Prince George's County, MD, and Fairfax County, VA. He is a popular motivator for young people, speaking in schools in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Ontario, Canada to name a few. He is the former assistant director of the Howard University Gospel Choir, former assistant director of the Bowie State University Gospel Choir, and former director of the Georgetown University Choir. Phillip has traveled the United States as a church music consultant leading workshops and seminars that focuses on church and choir ministry.

Phillip is the president and CEO of SOV, Inc. and Phillip Carter Music.
