Early Life

Cunanan was born in Pagbilao, Quezon, Philippines. But he was brought up in Kuala Belait, Brunei Darussalam by his mother, Vivian Cunanan, after she adopted him from her younger sister.

His birth first name, "RJ", is actually derived from his biological parents' proposed name for him which was "Robert Jake". Following the names of his siblings where all of their first names start with "Robert". Vivian then added, "Vince", as this was a name to her liking. Together with "Uriel", a name obtained from the Archangel Uriel, for they were Roman Catholics.

By 2006, his mother was a teacher in Brunei Darussalam. So she had her older sister accompany him to migrate into the country. Cunanan, by the age of 4, was raised in the administrative town of Belait District, Brunei. In a city of 4,259 people, Cunanan grew up and formally started his education in St. John's School, where his mother teaches.

Besides Filipino and English, Cunanan had to learn Bahasa Melayu. As this was a school subject and is the national language spoken. When he reached Primary 3, the 3rd year in elementary school, he then continued to learn Mandarin. For his mother started teaching in Chung Hua Middle School. A private Chinese school, where she brought Vince along with her. Cunanan spent his Primary 3 & 4 years at a Chinese school in a Muslim country. The diversity surrounding him was great. Where he used the 4 languages he learned to converse with the Chinese, Muslims, Indians, Westerns, and even Filipinos.
