Early Life

Twin sisters, fine artists and fashion designers Ekaterina and Elena Popovy was born and raised in Perm, Russia.

Art career

Popovy Sisters started making dolls in 2004. With a time this activity has transformed into a special thematic kind of art. Together with fashion, it has given them a freedom to express a contemporary and cosmopolitan vision of beauty. [1] Sisters invest a lot to get an authentic look of the dolls. In 2012 they started BJD line called “SISTERS”. Beginning with sketches they create everything by themselves: mold prototypes, makeup, body blushing, wigs, whole outfits, and shoes. [2] Within many years Popovy Sisters have developed know-how technique of a wireframe design for wigs and clothes. By now they accumulated a rich experience in working with different materials. To reflect the ongoing dialogue between past and present we use natural, high-quality traditional and modern materials. All dolls are limited edition.

By the end of summer 2017, Popovy Sisters are accomplishing two big and interesting projects: exclusive dolls for Die Antwoord and Jean Paul Gaultier. For the new Die Antwoord doll, the prototype was a mega charismatic soloist - Yolandi Visser (Yo-Landi).

Popovy Sisters collaborated with the famous graphic artist Tokato Yamomoto. He allowed them to use fragments of his drawings for tattoos on the dolls.

For experiments with fine art photography, sisters used fragments with texture in the photographs of the brilliant Nick Knight (photographer) from his "Flora" series.[3]

Collections

  • LAND¥ & LAND¥ RAT[4]

  • ROYALS[5]. First doll Rider Albino was introduced at the annual International Doll Salon in Moscow[6]. This collection was inspired by the game of chess. Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered gameboard with 64 squares , it combines art, science and sport. Sisters tried to convey the special charm of the game, its aesthetics and atmosphere using our own unique style. The whole collection is based on the contrast and geometry. Heavy materials set against light ones and soft silhouette are contrasted to sharp, rigid forms. A characteristic feature of this collection is a parallel elongation of horizontal lines and material stripes from the costume onto the sleeves. Little accent made on luxury by implementing massive jewelry, volumetric décor and royal fur in the outfits. The new image includes two different characters – an “albino girl” refined makeup and vivid makeup with thick black eyelashes as the opposite side. The “Albino” makeup includes handmade eyelashes made of mink fur, each eyelash being hand glued to make each doll even more unique. Original soundtrack that you hear in our gallery was traditionally created by Hålrum and for the first time second track was written by Kharaktic. 5 dolls were involved in the current photo shoot – Little Owl Albino, Little Owl Dark, Peewit Albino, Peewit Dark, Cockoo Dark.

  • PUPA [8] In this collection main colors are autumnal shades of red and gray with accent on natural fur textures, nonetheless. Unique wigs help to reveal the idea and complete images. Flowing locks of hair and dynamic, fluffy pigtails brings friskiness to the collection. Original ornamentation in the hair are made of beads and reminds of butterfly eyes. Wigs are made of Japanese silk and lama wool, preference is given to natural shades of red and blond hair. Pupa teenage girls are now have new makeup: freckles, blond eyelashes, smoky eye shadows reminds of gentle defenseless creatures.

Weightless silk, Italian and antique lace merges with body and draw light contours like thrill of tiny wings. Imagery are aerial and fragile but has strong character. Soft silhouettes are in harmony with rigid wing graphics and shaped in corset skirts. We created three new shoe prototypes and many design variations for them, their bioform lines brings us to the insect world.
