In 1990 Claudene Christian, then a student at the University of Southern California, and a member of its Song Girls Team,[1] began to manufacture life-like dolls similar in size to Mattel's Barbie Dolls, wearing the uniform of her team.[2] She later negotiated licenses for the rights to sell dolls wearing the uniforms of other cheerleading squads, eventually acquiring licenses to over 100 different team's uniforms. Dolls wearing the local uniforms were sold in campus gift shops. A series of lawsuits followed, between Collegiate Dolls and Mattel, that is now chronicled in multiple law textbooks.[3]
Christian founded Collegiate Dolls Corporation to manage the production and marketing of the dolls.[3] She was the corporation's first President. Her father Harry Christian was a co-founder and its Financial Officer.
In 1996 Mattel introduced Barbie Dolls wearing cheerleading uniforms, including the uniforms of the cheerleaders at Virginia Tech University.[3]
